High-density polyethylene: Overview
From milk jugs to water mains and crates
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.HDPE is polyethylene made with catalysts at low pressure so the chains stay nearly linear and pack tightly. That gives a stiffer, stronger plastic than LDPE. About 53 Mt was made in 2024, roughly 12% of all plastics. It goes into milk and detergent bottles, jerricans, crates, caps, water and gas pipes, carry bags and woven sacks. Ethylene is most of the cost and most of the carbon. Rigid HDPE packaging is one of the few plastics with a working recycling market, and India's EPR rules now mandate recycled content in it.
Volume about 53 Mt a year (2024, indicative: about 12.2% x 430.9 Mt) Market value about $45-55 billion a year (indicative: 53 Mt x $850-1,000/t, 2024-2025 CFR Asia levels) Growth PE demand forecast at about 3.5% a year to 2029 (Argus); HDPE and LLDPE take most of the 2027-28 capacity wave Plastics Europe Fast Facts 2025 via Chemical Week, Oct 2025 (total plastics); HDPE share indicative (Plastics Europe Fast Facts, PE-HD/MD about 12%); Argus Feb 2026 and Sep 2025; value derived (indicative)Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blow moulding (milk, detergent, oil and chemical bottles, jerricans, drums) | 28% | about 15 Mtbasis | HDPE is stiff, tough at low temperatures, resists acids, alkalis and detergents, and blow-moulds easily. It is cheaper than PET for opaque bottles and far lighter than glass or steel for drums and jerricans. indicative (basis: industry demand splits) | PET (clear bottles) polypropylene steel drums glass refill and reuse systems |
| Injection moulding (crates, caps and closures, pails, housewares) | 20% | about 11 Mtbasis | High stiffness and impact strength with fast cycle times; caps for PET bottles and returnable crates are classic HDPE parts. indicative | polypropylene recycled HDPE |
| Film (carry bags, liners, sacks) | 20% | about 11 Mtbasis | Thin HDPE film is crinkly but strong per gram, so it dominates cheap carry bags and liners. Bans and thickness limits (India: carry bags under 120 microns banned from Dec 2022) are cutting this use. indicative | LLDPE film paper woven and non-woven PP bags cloth |
| Pipe and conduit (water, gas, sewage, telecom ducts) | 18% | about 9.5 Mtbasis | Bimodal PE100 resins give 50-year pressure pipe that is flexible, corrosion-free and butt-weldable. HDPE competes with PVC and ductile iron in water mains and is the standard for city gas distribution and duct for fibre cables. indicative | PVC ductile iron steel PP-R (plumbing) |
| Raffia, monofilament, sheet and other (tapes, nets, geomembranes, UHMWPE) | 14% | about 7.5 Mtbasis | HDPE tapes and monofilaments make fishing nets, ropes, shade nets and woven fabrics; sheet makes pond and landfill liners. Ultra-high molecular weight PE is used in fibres and implants. indicative | polypropylene raffia nylon (nets) PVC membranes |
From raw material to user
- Ethylene from a steam cracker About 1.0 t ethylene per t HDPE plus 0-3% butene or hexene comonomer (indicative).
- Low-pressure polymerisation Slurry (loop or stirred tank) or gas-phase reactors at about 10-40 bar and 70-110°C with Ziegler-Natta or chromium catalysts (indicative).
- Bimodal or unimodal design Two reactors in series make bimodal grades with a short-chain and long-chain fraction for PE100 pipe and film (indicative).
- Compounding and pelletising Stabilisers, carbon black for pipe and colour are added; pellets go out in 25 kg bags or bulk.
- Conversion Blow moulding, injection moulding, pipe extrusion and film blowing; pipes last 50+ years, packaging under a year.
- Collection and recycling Rigid HDPE bottles are widely collected; India requires 30% recycled content in rigid packaging in 2025-26 rising to 60% in 2028-29.

- HDPE is about 53 Mt a year, roughly 12% of the world's 431 Mt of plastics (Plastics Europe 2024, indicative share).
- Indian HDPE film import prices fell to $830/t in Dec 2025, then rose to $1,220-1,260/t by Aug 2026 after the Hormuz disruption (Platts via S&P Global; Polymerupdate).
- Rigid HDPE packaging in India must contain 30% recycled plastic from 2025-26 and 60% by 2028-29 under EPR, unless food-safety rules forbid it.
