Herbicides: Cycles
How floods, curbs and overbuying whipsawed herbicide prices
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.Generic herbicide prices swing with Chinese supply. Energy curbs, floods, environmental inspections or Covid outbreaks in Chinese chemical parks can triple prices in months, as in 2021. Distributors then overbuy, and when supply returns the channel destocks for one to two years, as in 2023-2025. The floor is the Chinese cash cost of integrated producers. The ceiling is set by farmers switching molecules or skipping applications. Listed Indian exporters follow with a lag: revenue fell in FY2024 and again for PI Industries in FY2026.
The spread to watch Glyphosate technical price minus yellow phosphorus, glycine and methanol costNot published openly. CCM, SunSirs and Baiinfo track Chinese glyphosate, yellow phosphorus and glycine prices; producer margins (Xingfa, Wynca) show the spread in their results.
Booms and busts
- 2021-2022
A 2020 flood at Fuhua's Sichuan plant, a Covid outbreak in Hebei glycine plants and China's 'dual control' energy curbs in September 2021 cut supply as farm incomes rose.
China glyphosate technical from under RMB 28,000/t (early 2021) to over RMB 80,000/t (Oct 2021) (Bichos de Campo); US retail $11.50/gal to $27.50/gal (Western Producer, Aug 2021)
- 2021-2025
Glufosinate soared on glyphosate scarcity, then Chinese capacity tripled and prices collapsed.
glufosinate 95% TC $50,162/t (Nov 2021), $25,455/t (Dec 2022), $8,768/t (Aug 2023), $6,472/t (Sep 2025) (CCM)
- 2023-2024
Global channel destocking after the 2021-2022 overbuying; Chinese technicals re-entered markets at low prices.
glyphosate back to about RMB 25,000-30,000/t (indicative); India's agrochemical exports fell about 22% in FY2024 (Rubix)
- FY2023-FY2026
Indian listed companies took the downturn in revenue and margins; destocking lasted longer than expected.
UPL revenue about Rs 53,576 crore (FY2023) to Rs 43,098 crore (FY2024) (indicative); PI Industries revenue down 16% to Rs 6,714 crore and EBITDA margin 25% in FY2026 (PI Industries, May 2026)
What drives the cycle
- Chinese supply policy. Energy curbs, safety campaigns and environmental inspections in chemical parks move global supply within weeks.
- Channel inventory. Distributors in Brazil and the US buy ahead in a shortage and then destock for one to two seasons.
- Crop prices and planted area. High soybean and maize prices raise spending per hectare; weak prices push farmers to cheaper generics.
- Weed resistance. Glyphosate-resistant weeds push demand to glufosinate, 2,4-D, dicamba and pre-emergents.
- Regulation and litigation. Glyphosate cancer litigation in the US and EU renewal decisions can shift demand between molecules.
