Paints and coatings: Emissions

Why paint's footprint lies almost entirely in raw materials

Why paint's footprint lies almost entirely in raw materials What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 1.80 t CO2e per t range about 0.2-6.4 · weighted mix of decorative emulsions (about 0.2-1.4 t per t at PVC 60-80, Omya) and powder coatings (3.6-6.4 t per t, Tiger Coatings and VdL); solvent-borne industrial in between Global emissions per year 90.0 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · 1.8 t x about 50 Mt (indicative)

Per t of paint, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: Omya sustainability toolkit; Tiger Coatings CO2 infosheet (indicative weighting). Global total: derived (indicative).

Other environmental impacts

VOCs and ground-level ozone; lead in informal-sector paint in South Asia; biocides; microplastics from weathered paint and road markings.

Levers to cut emissions

  • Cut TiO2 use per square metre through better spacing, opaque polymers and extenders; Omya shows 1.40 to 1.00-1.25 t CO2 per t at PVC 60
  • Bio-based or bio-attributed binders and solvents
  • Low-carbon TiO2 (chloride route on clean power) and recycled-content extenders
  • Shift from solvent-borne to water-borne, powder and UV curing
  • Renewable heat for curing ovens at industrial customers

India

No national paint footprint is published; India's per capita use (3.5 kg) is a third of the world average, so volume growth will raise emissions unless TiO2 and resin footprints fall.

Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

For a climate investor The climate lever is in raw materials, not paint plants: lower-carbon TiO2, bio-based binders and formulations that use less TiO2 per square metre. Solar-reflective cool-roof coatings and corrosion protection that extends steel life are demand-side angles. What has to be true: brands will pay a premium or require EPDs; Indian makers (Asian Paints, Birla Opus) are integrating into monomers, which could carry bio-based or low-carbon feed.
