Paracetamol is made by acetylating para-aminophenol (PAP) with acetic anhydride. It is one of the largest-volume APIs: six Indian companies made about 6,000 t a month in 2020, and Granules India claims about 30% of world supply. The API sells for roughly $3-5 per kg. India met almost 40% of world demand in 2020 but relied on China for PAP; Meghmani's 13,500 t/yr PAP plant under PLI is the main import substitute. Its price history is the clearest public record of India's API cycle.

From raw material to user

  1. Benzene to phenol or nitrobenzene Phenol comes from the cumene process; nitrobenzene from benzene nitration.
  2. Para-aminophenol (PAP) Made by hydrogenating nitrobenzene in acid or by nitrating phenol and reducing; Meghmani's PLI plant has 13,500 t/yr (PSU Watch, 2026).
  3. Acetylation PAP reacts with acetic anhydride to paracetamol and acetic acid; about 0.72 kg PAP and 0.68 kg acetic anhydride per kg at 100% yield (stoichiometry).
  4. Purification and grading Recrystallised, dried and milled into powder, granular or DC grades.
  5. Formulation Tablets, syrups and IV; India produced about 6,000 t of API a month in 2020 against about 2,000 t domestic demand (Business Today, 2020).

Three things to know

  • India's paracetamol API price went from Rs 262/kg (Jan 2020) to about Rs 900/kg during the pandemic and back to about Rs 250/kg by 2024.
  • India supplied almost 40% of world paracetamol demand in 2020 but depended on China for PAP (Business Today, 2020).
  • Meghmani's 13,500 t/yr PAP plant, built under PLI for only Rs 60 crore, is India's main step to close that gap (PSU Watch, 2026).
