Organic pigments: Overview

Where pigments go: paints, printing inks and plastics

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Organic pigments are insoluble coloured carbon-based particles, unlike dyes, which dissolve. The main families are azo pigments (yellows, oranges, reds), copper phthalocyanine blues and greens, and high-performance pigments such as quinacridones, DPP reds and perylenes. World use is about 400 kt a year, worth about $6.7 billion (2025). China holds about 70% of capacity. India is a major exporter of phthalocyanines and azo pigments, and Sudarshan's 2025 purchase of Germany's Heubach made it one of the two largest pigment companies. Margins are thin in commodity grades and high in specialty grades.

Volume about 400 kt a year (2025) Market value $6.7 billion (2025), forecast $10.2 billion by 2035; other estimates put organic pigments at $3.3-5 billion Growth 4.3% a year to 2035 (forecast) Faxian Gongchang, China dyes and pigments 2026 report; Arihant Capital initiating coverage on Sudarshan (lower estimates)

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Paints and coatings45%about 180 ktbasis Phthalocyanine blues and greens, azo yellows and high-performance reds give bright, lightfast colours in automotive, industrial and decorative tinters, often replacing lead and chrome pigments. Printing inks (packaging, publication, digital)25%about 100 ktbasis CMYK printing uses pigment yellow 12/13 (diarylides), red 57:1 (lithol rubine), blue 15:3 (phthalocyanine) and carbon black. Packaging print grows as publication print declines. Arihant Capital; Faxian Gongchang 2026 (35% ink share) Dye-based inkjet inks

Plastics and masterbatch20%about 80 ktbasis Pigments must survive processing at 200-300 C without migrating; phthalocyanines, quinacridones and DPPs are used in polyolefins, PVC and engineering plastics. Arihant Capital Solvent dyes for transparent plastics

From raw material to user

  1. Aromatic intermediates Benzene, toluene and naphthalene derivatives (aniline, dichlorobenzidine, phthalic anhydride, beta-naphthol) and arylides; India keeps anti-dumping duties of 24.79-44.90% on Chinese arylides (DGTR, Oct 2026).
  2. Crude pigment synthesis Diazo coupling for azo pigments; phthalic anhydride, urea and a copper salt at about 200 C for copper phthalocyanine crude (indicative).
  3. Conditioning and finishing Crude pigment is milled, solvent-treated and surface-treated to set particle size, which decides shade, strength and dispersibility.
  4. Dispersion by customers Ink, paint and masterbatch makers disperse pigment into their binders; Sudarshan has about 35% of India's organised pigment market (Arihant).

Three things to know

  • China has about 280 kt/yr of organic pigment capacity, about 70% of the world (Faxian Gongchang 2026).
  • Sudarshan bought Heubach for INR 13.4 billion and reported FY26 revenue of INR 97.9 billion, but only a 6.0% EBITDA margin as integration lagged (Arihant Capital, May 2026).
  • High-performance pigments sell for RMB 250,000-550,000/t (DPP, quinacridone, benzimidazolone), ten times or more the price of dyes (Faxian Gongchang 2026).
