Polystyrene and EPS: Overview

From yoghurt pots to fridge liners and insulation

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Polystyrene is made by polymerising styrene monomer. Clear general-purpose PS (GPPS) and rubber-toughened high-impact PS (HIPS) are moulded into cups, food trays, fridge liners and housings. Expandable PS (EPS) beads contain pentane and are steam-expanded into foam that is about 98% air, used for insulation boards and protective packaging. About 15 Mt is made a year. Its footprint is high per tonne because styrene is carbon-intensive, and foamed foodware has been banned in the EU and in parts of India's single-use rules.

Volume about 15 Mt a year of PS and EPS (2024, indicative: styrene tile basis of 42% x 35 Mt styrene); roughly 8-9 Mt GPPS and HIPS and 6-7 Mt EPS (indicative split) Market value about $17-20 billion a year (indicative: about 15 Mt x $1,100-1,300/t, styrene price plus a typical conversion margin) Growth about 1-2% a year; global EPS capacity was forecast to rise only about 2% from 10.59 Mt in 2021 to 10.83 Mt in 2026 styrene tile (Argus, Mysteel); GlobalData via Offshore Technology (EPS capacity); value indicative

Food packaging and food service (yoghurt pots, cups, trays, clamshells, cutlery)30%about 4.5 Mtbasis GPPS and HIPS thermoform easily into thin, stiff, clear or white packs, and foamed PS insulates hot food cheaply. EPS insulation boards (walls, roofs, cold stores, geofoam)25%about 3.75 Mtbasis EPS boards give low thermal conductivity (about 0.031-0.038 W/m.K) at the lowest cost per unit of insulation; graphite-filled grey EPS cuts conductivity further. Building energy codes drive demand. indicative XPS

Shares are indicative industry splits; total about 15 Mt from the styrene tile (42% of about 35 Mt styrene). Plastics Europe's PS share of roughly 5% of all plastics would imply more; the styrene-based figure is used here.

From raw material to user

  1. Benzene plus ethylene to styrene About 0.79 t benzene and 0.28 t ethylene make 1 t styrene via ethylbenzene dehydrogenation (styrene tile).
  2. Bulk (mass) polymerisation for GPPS and HIPS Styrene, with 5-10% dissolved polybutadiene for HIPS, is polymerised continuously at about 110-180°C; unreacted monomer is devolatilised and recycled (indicative).
  3. Suspension polymerisation for EPS Styrene droplets in water are polymerised to beads and impregnated with about 4-7% pentane as blowing agent, plus flame retardant for building grades (indicative).
  4. Conversion GPPS/HIPS are thermoformed or injection-moulded; EPS beads are pre-expanded with steam to 10-40 kg/m3 and moulded into blocks or shapes (indicative).
  5. Use and end of life Foodware lasts minutes; insulation lasts decades. EPS is bulky waste and little is recycled; India banned PS (thermocol) decoration items and several single-use PS items in 2022.

Three things to know

  • About 42% of the world's roughly 35 Mt of styrene becomes PS and EPS (styrene tile), so PS is about 15 Mt a year.
  • PS carries about 3 t CO2e per t cradle-to-gate, the highest of the commodity thermoplastics except PVC, whose global average is pulled up by the coal-carbide route (derived from styrene tile; ACC 2020 GPPS 2.67 t CO2 per t).
  • India has no styrene monomer plant and imports all its styrene; Supreme Petrochem is the main domestic PS and EPS maker (styrene tile; GlobalData).
