Specialty amines and ethanolamines: Cycles
Boom, squeeze, recovery: Chinese exports set the rhythm
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.Amine prices follow their feedstocks with a lag and swing with Chinese export prices. In tight markets, producers earn wide spreads because few plants make each product; when Chinese capacity is high, prices fall towards methanol and ammonia cost. Indian makers' results show the cycle: a boom in FY2021-FY2022 on pharma demand and Chinese supply curbs, a squeeze in FY2024 as Chinese prices fell, and a recovery in 2026 as Gulf disruption raised costs that producers could pass on. The floor is raw material cost; the ceiling is Chinese import parity.
The spread to watch DMA price minus 1.42 t methanol and 0.38 t ammoniaAmine prices are not published openly. Raw materials were about $1,000/t of DMA at Q2 2026 Indian prices (calculated, indicative). Margins are best tracked through Alkyl and Balaji EBITDA per tonne: Balaji's FY2026 EBITDA was about Rs 27,500 per tonne sold (Rs 294 crore / 106,970 t, calculated).
Booms and busts
- FY2021-FY2022
Covid-era pharma and sanitiser demand and Chinese energy curbs tightened amines and acetonitrile; Indian amine makers' revenue and valuations peaked.
Alkyl Amines revenue Rs 1,542 crore at 21.2% EBITDA margin (FY2022) (StockAnalysis)
- FY2023-FY2024
Chinese capacity and lower methanol and ammonia prices brought prices down; Indian margins compressed.
Alkyl Amines revenue Rs 1,683 crore (FY2023) to Rs 1,441 crore (FY2024); EBITDA margin 20.7% to 17.7% (StockAnalysis)
- FY2025-FY2026
Flat volumes and prices; Balaji's sales volume grew 2.5% to 106,970 t.
Balaji revenue Rs 1,430 crore (FY2025) to Rs 1,454 crore (FY2026), EBITDA margin 19% to 20% (Balaji Amines)
- 2026
Gulf shipping disruption raised Indian methanol import prices; amine makers passed on higher commodity prices.
India methanol CFR $309/t (Dec 2025) to $569/t (Apr-Jun 2026 average) (methanol tile: S&P Global, Crisil); Balaji Q4 FY2026 EBITDA margin 25%; Alkyl Q1 FY2027 25.3%
What drives the cycle
- Methanol and ammonia prices. Most of the cost of methylamines; India imports both, so freight and Gulf risk matter.
- Chinese export prices. China's DMF, methylamine and ethanolamine exports set Asian prices.
- Pharma and agrochemical demand. Indian API and agrochemical output drives domestic amine sales.
- Carbon capture projects. New capture plants need initial solvent fills and make-up amines.
