Specialty amines and ethanolamines: Overview

From glyphosate to gas scrubbing: where amines quietly turn up

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Amines are ammonia with one or more hydrogens replaced by carbon groups. Methylamines come from methanol and ammonia, ethylamines from ethanol, ethanolamines from ethylene oxide, and ethyleneamines from ethylene dichloride or monoethanolamine. Together they are a market of about $16-22 billion in 2025 (Mordor; IMARC). They end up in pharmaceuticals, glyphosate and 2,4-D salts, mancozeb, the solvent DMF, detergents, cement additives and amine scrubbers that capture CO2. India has two strong listed makers, Alkyl Amines and Balaji Amines, both exposed to imported methanol and ammonia prices.

Volume about 5-7 Mt a year across ethanolamines, alkylamines, ethyleneamines and fatty amines (indicative); ethanolamines about 2.5 Mt (derived: about 2 Mt EO, ethylene oxide tile, at about 0.8 t EO per t) Market value $16.15 billion (2025, Mordor Intelligence) to $22.4 billion (2025, IMARC); ethanolamines 42.18% of value (Mordor) Growth 4.0-4.7% a year to the early 2030s (IMARC 4.03% to 2034; Mordor 4.69% to 2031) Mordor Intelligence via GII (2026); IMARC (2026); ethylene oxide tile (derived)

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Agrochemicals20%about $3.2 billionbasis Isopropylamine and dimethylamine make the soluble salts of glyphosate and 2,4-D; ethylenediamine is the backbone of mancozeb; ethyl- and isopropylamine go into atrazine; diethanolamine feeds Bayer's IDA route to glyphosate. IMARC names agriculture the largest application. IMARC (2026) for ranking; share indicative potassium and ammonium salts of glyphosate
choline salts (Enlist)
Surfactants, detergents and personal care20%about $3.2 billionbasis Triethanolamine neutralises fatty acids in soaps and cosmetics; DMAPA and dimethylamine make betaines and amine oxides in shampoos and dishwashing liquids; fatty amines make fabric softener quats. indicative share sodium and potassium hydroxide neutralisers
sugar-based surfactants
Solvents and chemical intermediates (DMF, DMAc, NMP, choline chloride)18%about $2.9 billionbasis Dimethylamine and carbon monoxide give DMF, a solvent for spandex, polyurethane leather and pharmaceuticals; monomethylamine and gamma-butyrolactone give NMP for battery electrode slurries; trimethylamine gives choline chloride for poultry feed. indicative share DMSO, cyrene and other greener solvents
water-based electrode processing
Pharmaceuticals12%about $1.9 billionbasis Methylamines, ethylamines and their derivatives are building blocks in many APIs (e.g. metformin uses dimethylamine, ranitidine and many antihistamines use dimethylamino groups). India's generic pharma industry is a core customer of Alkyl and Balaji. indicative share few; amine groups are part of the drug molecule
Gas treating and carbon capture (MEA, DEA, MDEA, piperazine)10%about $1.6 billionbasis Aqueous amines absorb CO2 and H2S from natural gas, refinery and syngas streams and from flue gas. Monoethanolamine is the benchmark solvent for post-combustion carbon capture. indicative share hot potassium carbonate
physical solvents (Selexol, Rectisol)
solid sorbents
Cement and construction (grinding aids)6%about $1.0 billionbasis Triethanolamine and triisopropanolamine cut energy in cement grinding and raise early strength, useful when clinker is replaced by fly ash or slag. indicative share glycol-based grinding aids
Epoxy curing, chelates, water treatment, rubber chemicals and other14%about $2.3 billionbasis Ethyleneamines (DETA, TETA) cure epoxy resins for wind blades and coatings; EDTA from ethylenediamine chelates metals; morpholine and cyclohexylamine protect boiler water; amines make rubber accelerators. indicative share anhydride hardeners
phosphonate chelates
Shares are indicative splits of value applied to the Mordor 2025 total of $16.15 billion. IMARC ranks agriculture first, then gas treatment, petroleum, water treatment, personal care and coatings.

From raw material to user

  1. Ammonia Every amine needs ammonia: about 0.28 t per t monoethanolamine and 0.38 t per t dimethylamine (stoichiometric); ammonia emits about 2.8 t CO2e per t (ammonia tile).
  2. Carbon feed Methanol (about 1.42 t per t DMA), ethanol (about 1.02 t per t ethylamine), ethylene oxide (about 0.72 t per t MEA), or ethylene dichloride (stoichiometric).
  3. Amination Gas-phase reaction over acid or hydrogenation catalysts at 350-450 C (methylamines) or liquid-phase reaction of EO with aqueous ammonia (ethanolamines) gives an equilibrium mix (indicative).
  4. Separation Distillation trains split mono-, di- and tri- products; ratios are tuned by recycling, but co-products must still be sold.
  5. Derivatives DMF, DMAc, choline chloride, EDTA, morpholine, NMM and DMAPA are made next to the amine units (e.g. Balaji's NMM and EDTA projects, FY2027).

Three things to know

  • Balaji Amines sold 106,970 t in FY2026 at a 20% EBITDA margin, rising to 25% in Q4 FY2026 (Balaji Amines, May 2026).
  • Alkyl Amines' revenue has stayed near Rs 1,440-1,680 crore a year from FY2022 to FY2026 while EBITDA margin moved between about 18% and 21% (StockAnalysis), then rose to 25.3% in Q1 FY2027 (Sahi, Aug 2026).
  • Monoethanolamine, about 0.72 t of ethylene oxide plus 0.28 t ammonia per tonne, is the benchmark solvent for carbon capture (stoichiometric; IEAGHG, indicative).
