Specialty amines and ethanolamines: Production

How Indian makers ran flat out while China dominates

What this tab covers Who makes it and how much: world capacity and output, utilisation, the top producing countries and companies globally and in India, concentration, new capacity coming, and each region's position.

India is broadly self-sufficient in methylamines and ethylamines through Alkyl and Balaji, and exports some. It imports most ethanolamines from the Gulf and Asia because it has little merchant EO (indicative). Feedstock methanol is about 98% imported (methanol tile).

Position by region

RegionPosition
USLarge integrated producers on cheap shale gas and ethane; carbon capture under 45Q credits raises MEA and specialty solvent demand (indicative).
EUHigh gas prices since 2022 hurt ammonia and methanol-based amines; REACH restrictions on DMF (from Dec 2023) and NMP (from 2020) cut solvent demand.
IndiaMethanol and much ammonia are imported, so Gulf disruption in 2026 hit costs; Balaji reported a brief production disruption in March 2026.
ChinaLargest producer and exporter; low-priced exports of DMF and methylamines set Asian prices (indicative).
JapanSpecialty amine makers (Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Tosoh, Nippon Shokubai) serve electronics and pharma.
Middle EastEthanolamines on low-cost ethane; key supplier to India.
