Toluene: Cycles
Squeezed between petrol and paraxylene
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.Toluene trades between two anchors. Its floor is gasoline blending value, which tracks crude and octane. Its ceiling is its value as feed to xylene and benzene conversion, which tracks paraxylene. When paraxylene margins are strong, toluene is pulled into conversion and tightens; when petrol octane is valuable, refiners keep it in gasoline. Solvent buyers, a minority, take whatever price these two outlets set. Shocks come from crude and naphtha, as in 2020 and 2026.
The spread to watch Toluene minus naphtha; paraxylene minus tolueneToluene-naphtha shows refiner extraction margin; paraxylene-toluene shows the incentive to convert. Recent levels not published in sources reached.
Booms and busts
- 2020
COVID-19 cut petrol demand and refinery runs. Toluene lost its gasoline outlet and Asian prices fell with crude.
not published in sources reached; crude fell below $20/bbl in April 2020 (indicative)
- 2022
After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, high petrol cracks and octane values pulled toluene into the US and European gasoline pool, tightening Asian supply and lifting the toluene-naphtha spread (indicative).
not published in sources reached
- March 2026
The near-closure of Hormuz from 28 February cut naphtha supply to Asia. Toluene rose with other aromatics.
$781/t FOB Korea on 2 Mar 2026, highest since February 2025 (S&P Global)
What drives the cycle
- Paraxylene margins. About 45% of toluene is converted; when PX-naphtha spreads fall (from $462/t in 2018 to $283/t in 2024, Argus), conversion demand softens.
- Gasoline octane value. Strong petrol cracks keep toluene in gasoline, especially in the US.
- Crude and naphtha prices. Set the cost base and the gasoline floor.
- Solvent demand. Paints, inks and pharma demand is steady but small; VOC rules erode it slowly.
