Toluene: Overview
Petrol octane, paint thinner and mattress foam from one liquid
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.Toluene is the most abundant aromatic in refinery reformate. Most of it never leaves the refinery as toluene: it is blended into petrol for octane or converted into paraxylene and benzene. The rest is sold as a solvent for paints, inks, adhesives and pharmaceuticals, and as feed for toluene diisocyanate (TDI) used in flexible polyurethane foam. The market was worth about $31.8 billion in 2025 (IMARC). For India, toluene is a key solvent for pharma and agrochemical synthesis, and domestic output is small relative to use.
Volume about 35 Mt a year (2025, indicative, derived: IMARC value divided by about $850-900/t average price) Market value $31.8 billion (2025) Growth 4.6% a year to 2034 (IMARC forecast to $48.3 billion) IMARC Group, 2025; volume derived and indicativeKey uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conversion to benzene and xylenes (disproportionation, transalkylation, hydrodealkylation) | 45% | about 15.8 Mtbasis | Paraxylene and benzene are usually worth more than toluene. Aromatics complexes route toluene into disproportionation or transalkylation units with C9 aromatics to raise paraxylene yield. This is the swing outlet that balances the market. indicative share, industry estimates; IMARC 2025 names it a primary demand driver | more xylenes from reformate directly toluene methylation with methanol |
| Gasoline blending (octane) | 25% | about 8.8 Mtbasis | Toluene has a blending octane above 110 and low benzene content, so refiners keep it in the petrol pool when octane is scarce. IMARC describes gasoline as the dominant application where reformate toluene left in petrol is counted. indicative share; IMARC 2025 | alkylate ethanol MTBE and ETBE |
| Solvents (paints, inks, adhesives, rubber, pharma) | 20% | about 7.0 Mtbasis | Toluene dissolves resins well, evaporates at a useful rate and is cheaper than most alternatives. It replaced benzene as a general solvent. In India it is widely used in API and agrochemical synthesis. indicative share | water-based coatings esters and ketones bio-solvents |
| TDI via dinitrotoluene | 6% | about 2.1 Mtbasis | Nitration to dinitrotoluene, hydrogenation to toluene diamine and phosgenation give TDI, the isocyanate for flexible foam in mattresses and car seats. About 0.7-0.8 t toluene per t TDI (indicative). indicative share | MDI-based flexible foams latex and spring mattresses |
| Other chemicals (benzoic acid, benzyl chloride, TNT, cresols) | 4% | about 1.4 Mtbasis | Oxidation and chlorination give food preservatives, plasticisers, fragrance and pharma intermediates. Small volumes but higher value. indicative share | varies by product |
From raw material to user
- Crude oil to naphtha Heavy naphtha from crude distillation is the feed for reformers.
- Catalytic reforming Reformers produce a reformate in which toluene is often the largest aromatic, roughly 15-25% by weight (indicative).
- Extraction Sulfolane extraction and distillation recover toluene with benzene and xylenes; pyrolysis gasoline from naphtha crackers adds more.
- Swing decision Refiners send toluene to petrol, to xylene and benzene conversion, or to solvent sales depending on spreads.
- Derivatives Solvent grade goes to paints, inks and pharma; nitration grade to TDI.

Oil Crude oilThree things to know
- Most toluene is a feedstock for other aromatics or petrol: about 70% goes to conversion or gasoline (indicative).
- India produced only 127,000 t in 2017 against 288,000 t of capacity (DCPC via CEIC), so solvent users rely on imports.
- Asian toluene hit $781/t FOB Korea on 2 March 2026, its highest since February 2025 (S&P Global).
