Chiquita, Dole and the supermarkets now pushing back

There is no banana futures market. Prices are set mainly in contracts, often annual, between exporters and supermarket chains, with a spot market for uncontracted fruit. A few multinationals, notably Chiquita, Dole and Fresh Del Monte, long dominated marketing, though supermarkets and Ecuadorian exporters have gained power. Ecuador sets an official minimum box price for growers. Morgan notes that in the 1970s banana-exporting governments were pushing export taxes, quotas and local equity stakes to capture more value from multinationals (pdf p. 342).

• US retailers and importers (22.1% of world import value in 2024), Germany (7.3%), Japan (6.7%), the Netherlands (6.4%), China (6.2%) and France (6.0%) (UN Comtrade)
• Gulf importers in Saudi Arabia (2.1%) and Kuwait buy from India, the Philippines and Ecuador
• Ripeners and wholesalers in importing countries buy green fruit for ripening rooms

• Ecuador (26.7% of export value in 2024), Colombia (9.3%), Costa Rica (9.1%) and Guatemala (8.9%) (UN Comtrade)
• The Philippines exported 3.0 Mt in 2025, mainly to Japan and China (FAO via FreshPlaza)
• Multinationals (Fresh Del Monte, Dole, Chiquita, Fyffes) and Ecuadorian exporters
