Beryllium: Overview

Phones, jets and cars: what beryllium alloys actually do

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Consumer electronics: beryllium-copper springs, connectors and contacts in phones and computers29%indicative about 67 t Be a year in the USbasis Beryllium-copper is the strongest copper alloy, keeps its spring after millions of cycles and still conducts electricity well. That makes it the choice for tiny connector springs and contacts that must not relax. Sales to consumer electronics fell in 2025 after a quality issue at one large precision-strip customer (Materion 10-K 2025). USGS MCS 2026; Materion Form 10-K FY2025 Copper-nickel-silicon and copper-nickel-tin alloys
Phosphor bronze (lower performance)
Copper-titanium alloys
Aerospace and defence: beryllium metal mirrors and structures, guidance systems, aircraft bushings24%indicative about 55 t Be a year in the USbasis Beryllium metal is very light and very stiff, holds its shape across temperature swings and is transparent to X-rays. It goes into satellite and telescope mirrors, guidance systems and other defence hardware, which is why the US government backed a domestic metal plant under the Defense Production Act in 2010 (USGS). Aerospace and defence was 20% of Materion's 2025 value-added sales. USGS MCS 2026; Materion Form 10-K FY2025 Metal matrix and organic composites
Silicon carbide (mirrors)
High-strength aluminium, titanium or steel (lower performance)
Industrial components: moulds, bearings, oil and gas drilling tools, welding electrodes17%indicative about 39 t Be a year in the USbasis Beryllium-copper is hard, non-sparking, non-magnetic and conducts heat well, so it is used for plastic-injection moulds that cool fast, bushings for heavy equipment, and tools in explosive atmospheres. USGS MCS 2026 Tool steels and aluminium bronze
Copper-nickel-tin alloys
Automotive electronics: connectors, sensors and relays9%indicative about 21 t Be a year in the USbasis Engine-bay and battery connectors face heat and vibration, where beryllium-copper keeps contact force longer than cheaper alloys. Sales to this market fell in early 2025 (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 Copper-nickel-silicon alloys
Phosphor bronze
Energy applications (including nuclear and oil and gas)8%indicative about 18 t Be a year in the USbasis Beryllium is a neutron reflector and moderator in research and fusion reactors, and beryllium-copper serves in downhole tools. Materion reported energy volumes up 12% in 2025. USGS MCS 2026; Materion Form 10-K FY2025 Graphite and heavy water (neutron moderation)
Steel and other copper alloys (tools)
Semiconductors (2%) and other uses (11%), including beryllium oxide ceramics, medical and X-ray windows13%indicative about 30 t Be a year in the USbasis Beryllium oxide conducts heat almost like a metal while insulating electrically, so it serves as a substrate for high-power electronics. Thin beryllium foil is the standard X-ray window. Semiconductor volumes rose 21% at Materion in 2025. USGS MCS 2026; Materion Form 10-K FY2025 Aluminium nitride or boron nitride (instead of beryllium oxide)
Shares are for the US, by sales revenue, 2025 (USGS MCS 2026). The US mines over half the world's beryllium, so its pattern is a fair guide, but no global split is published.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Mining Bertrandite ore is mined at Spor Mountain, Utah, the only large producing mine; beryl is hand-sorted from pegmatites in Brazil, China, Nigeria, Mozambique and elsewhere.
  2. 2. Milling to beryllium hydroxide Bertrandite and imported beryl are leached and converted to beryllium hydroxide at Materion's Delta, Utah mill (Materion 10-K 2025).
  3. 3. Conversion Hydroxide is converted to beryllium metal, beryllium oxide or beryllium-copper master alloy (about 4% Be) at Elmore, Ohio, and at plants in Kazakhstan and China.
  4. 4. Alloy and metal products Master alloy is diluted into beryllium-copper strip, rod and bar; metal is pressed into blocks for machining. US consumption was valued at about $360 million in 2025 (USGS).
  5. 5. Component makers Connector, spring, mould and optics makers machine parts under strict dust controls, because beryllium dust is toxic.
  6. 6. End users Phones, cars, aircraft, satellites, defence systems, oil tools and X-ray equipment.
  7. 7. Recycling New and old scrap may supply 20-25% of US consumption; the leading producer recovers about 40% of the beryllium in alloy scrap (USGS 2026).
