Cassava: Production

How Africa came to grow a crop from the Americas

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

FAOSTAT records 342 million tonnes of fresh cassava in 2024, more than double the 152 million of 1990 and up from 310 million in 2020. Nigeria grew 18.3%, the Democratic Republic of Congo 13.6%, Thailand 8.4%, Ghana 8.2%, Brazil 5.6% and Indonesia 4.6%. The HHI of 797 makes it one of the least concentrated crops. Two systems coexist. In Africa, cassava is mainly a subsistence and local-market food. In Southeast Asia, it is an industrial cash crop feeding starch mills and the export chip trade.
