Grapes & wine: Movement

Why your winter grapes come from Peru and Chile

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

Fresh and dried grapes (HS 0806) earned $12.5 billion of exports in 2024. Peru (13.9%) and Chile (12.1%) led, shipping in the northern winter, followed by China, the United States, the Netherlands and South Africa. The United States took 22.6% of imports. Wine (HS 2204) is three times larger, at $38.0 billion. France supplied 33.3% and Italy 23.0%, so two countries earned over half of world wine export value. The US, UK and Germany were the biggest buyers. China's punitive duties on Australian wine, since lifted, showed wine's exposure to trade politics.
