Hafnium: Movement

Why Germany, not a miner, ships most US hafnium

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

Unwrought hafnium has its own tariff line, HS 8112.31, and China and Germany are the leading global exporters. USGS reports that US imports of unwrought hafnium in 2021–24 came from Germany (54%), China (21%), France (12%) and the United Kingdom (8%). The host mineral moves differently. Zircon concentrate ships mainly from Australia and South Africa, and China is the leading importer. So the ore trade and the metal trade have different geographies.

No distinct HS trade code for this commodity, so trade flows are not charted.
