Hafnium: Overview

Where this neutron-eating metal ends up, from jets to chips

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Nickel superalloys for aircraft and industrial gas-turbine blades and vanes61%about 45 t Hf a yearbasis Small hafnium additions strengthen grain boundaries in cast nickel superalloys and improve resistance to cracking and oxidation at turbine temperatures. Directionally solidified blades and vanes in jet engines and power-station turbines rely on it. Turbine orders of about 80 GW in 2024 far exceeded the 30 GW combined output capacity of GE Vernova, Siemens Energy and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Argus 2025). EU CRM study 2023; Argus (Oct 2025); USGS MCS 2026 Zirconium, which can be used interchangeably with hafnium in certain superalloys (USGS)
Alloy designs without hafnium (with some loss of performance)
Plasma-cutting electrode tips15%about 11 t Hf a yearbasis A hafnium insert in a copper electrode emits electrons well and forms a protective oxide in air and oxygen plasma, so the electrode lasts longer when cutting steel plate. EU CRM study 2023 Zirconium electrode inserts
Tungsten electrodes (in argon-hydrogen and nitrogen plasma)
Nuclear reactor control rods11%about 8 t Hf a yearbasis Hafnium absorbs neutrons strongly, is corrosion resistant in hot water and keeps its mechanical properties under radiation, so it is used in control rods, notably in naval reactors. EU CRM study 2023; USGS MCS 2026 Boron carbide
Silver-indium-cadmium alloys (USGS)
Catalyst precursors (hafnium tetrachloride for polyolefin catalysts and chemicals)7%about 5 t Hf a yearbasis Hafnium metallocene catalysts make some speciality polypropylene and polyethylene grades with controlled structure. EU CRM study 2023 Zirconium metallocene catalysts
Ziegler-Natta titanium catalysts
Semiconductors (hafnium oxide high-k gate and memory dielectrics) and optical coatings6%about 4.5 t Hf a yearbasis Hafnium oxide replaced silicon dioxide as the gate insulator in advanced logic chips because it blocks leakage at very thin layers, and it is used in memory devices. Demand is rising with AI-driven memory production (Argus 2025). In optics, it forms hard, high-index coatings. EU CRM study 2023; Reuters via Kitco (Feb 2023); Argus (Oct 2025) Zirconium oxide (in some DRAM capacitors)
Tantalum pentoxide and other high-index oxides (optics)
EU end-use shares (EU CRM 2023) applied to Argus's 2025 estimate of world pure hafnium metal supply of 70-75 t/yr; traders estimated total supply at 80-90 t in 2023 (Reuters). USGS says the leading US use of hafnium metal is superalloys.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Zircon mining Hafnium occurs in every zircon grain, always with zirconium; world zircon output was about 1.2 Mt in 2025 (USGS).
  2. 2. Chlorination Zircon is carbochlorinated to a mixed zirconium-hafnium tetrachloride.
  3. 3. Zirconium-hafnium separation Because nuclear-grade zirconium must be hafnium-free, the two are separated by solvent extraction or extractive distillation. About 50 t of zirconium is processed for each tonne of hafnium (Reuters 2023).
  4. 4. Reduction to sponge Hafnium tetrachloride or oxide is reduced with magnesium (Kroll process) to hafnium sponge; the US plants are in Oregon and Utah (USGS).
  5. 5. Refining and compounds Sponge is melted to ingot or refined to crystal bar; high-purity hafnium tetrachloride and oxide are made for chips and catalysts.
  6. 6. End users Superalloy melters for turbine makers, plasma-torch makers, reactor builders and semiconductor fabs. Unwrought hafnium cost $3,800/kg in 2025 (USGS).

Three things to know

  • The US unwrought hafnium price rose almost eightfold in two years, from $781/kg in 2021 to $6,130/kg in 2023.
  • US imports of unwrought hafnium roughly tripled, from 23 t in 2021 to 72 t in 2025.
  • Criticality studies naming hafnium rose from 50% overall to 75% of those published after 2014 (Hayes & McCullough).
