Nickel: Production

How Indonesia took over the world's nickel supply

How Indonesia took over the world's nickel supply What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

Indonesia produced 62% of world mine output in 2024, giving an HHI of 4,039, which is highly concentrated. The Philippines followed with about 10% and Russia with 6%. World output rose 48% between 2020 and 2024, almost all of the growth Indonesian. USGS expects Indonesian output to rise another 13% in 2025, to about two-thirds of the world total. Much of it is processed in Chinese-backed industrial parks in Indonesia. High-cost producers are retreating: Australian output fell an estimated 54% in 2025 as mines went into care and maintenance.
