Potatoes: Criticality
The Irish famine and the danger of relying on one crop
What this tab covers How exposed economies are to a supply disruption: the EU, US and India listings, the concentration score, and a quantified exposure for the US, EU, India, China, Japan, Latin America, the Middle East and Australia. Where the EU scored it, a chart of supply risk against economic importance, with import reliance, recycling input and substitutes.Exposure by region

Potatoes are not on any critical raw materials list, but they matter for food security in poor and cold regions. Because most are eaten where grown, a local harvest failure hits hard and imports offer little relief. The Irish famine remains the starkest case of dependence on one crop (Morgan, pdf p. 62). Today's risks are late blight, heat and drought, and in some countries reliance on imported seed. The crop's high yield per hectare makes it a useful hedge for land-scarce countries.
