Potatoes: Production
How China and India came to grow two-fifths of the crop
What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.FAOSTAT puts 2024 world potato output at about 390 million tonnes, up from 267 million in 1990. Growth came in two spurts, in the 1990s and after 2010, reaching 371 million in 2020. China (24.3%) and India (14.6%) together grow nearly two-fifths of the crop. Ukraine, the United States, Russia and Germany follow. The HHI of 940 means production is unconcentrated. The crop's centre of gravity has moved from Europe toward Asia, where potatoes are a cheap and fast-growing staple.
