Pulses: Production

Why Canada outgrows India in lentils

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

FAOSTAT records 7.89 million tonnes of lentils and 16.9 million tonnes of chickpeas in 2024, roughly three and two and a half times their 1990 levels. Lentils are moderately concentrated, with an HHI of 1,837: Canada grew 30.8%, India 22.7% and Australia 16.0%. Chickpeas are highly concentrated, with an HHI of 4,499, because India grows 65.4%, followed by Australia at 13.4%. The structures differ. Canadian and Australian output is grown largely for export, while India's crop feeds the world's largest pulse market and still falls short of demand.
