Pumice: Production

Why Turkey makes nearly half the world's pumice

Why Turkey makes nearly half the world's pumice What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

USGS estimates world output at 20.2 million t in 2024 and 20 million t in 2025, including pozzolan and volcanic tuff for some countries. Turkey dominates with 9.7 million t, nearly half the total. Jordan (1.1 million t), Greece (1 million t), Saudi Arabia and Algeria follow. That is high concentration at the top, with a long tail of volcanic countries from Ecuador to Uganda. Output is far larger outside the US because pumice is a standard lightweight aggregate in European construction, often in prefabricated lightweight concrete walls. US production was 430,000 t in 2025, up 5%.

USGS estimate

World, 2024 20,200 thousand metric tons (pumice and related material; some countries include pozzolan and volcanic tuff) World, 2025e 20,000 thousand metric tons (pumice and related material; some countries include pozzolan and volcanic tuff)

Largest producers by company, global

Company volumes are not published on a comparable basis.

Largest producers by company, India

India is not listed among pumice producers by USGS (2025). Indian users such as denim laundries and cleaning-product makers rely on imports; no import volume is published separately.
