Glass, clocks and quantum labs: rubidium's specialist uses

Glass, clocks and quantum labs: rubidium's specialist uses What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Specialty glass, including glass for fibre-optic telecommunicationsn/a n/a basis Rubidium carbonate lowers the electrical conductivity of glass, which improves stability and durability in fibre-optic networks and some specialty glass. Only small additions are needed. Cesium can often do the same job, but it is no easier to obtain. USGS MCS 2026, Rubidium Cesium carbonate (similar properties)
Potassium compounds in less demanding glass
Atomic frequency standards (rubidium oscillators for telecoms and GPS)n/a n/a basis Rubidium oscillators are compact, cheaper atomic clocks used to synchronise telecom networks and in GPS satellites and receivers. The US Naval Observatory timescale includes six rubidium fountain clocks. They are less precise than cesium primary standards but much smaller and cheaper. USGS MCS 2026, Rubidium Cesium beam clocks
Quartz oscillators (lower stability)
Hydrogen masers
Photoemissive and sensing devices (night vision, photomultipliers, magnetometers, photoelectric cells)n/a n/a basis Rubidium releases electrons easily when struck by light, so it is used in photocathodes for night-vision devices, photomultiplier tubes and spectrometers. Rubidium vapour also underpins sensitive atomic magnetometers and motion sensors. USGS MCS 2026, Rubidium Cesium and multi-alkali photocathodes
Solid-state sensors (silicon, InGaAs)
Biomedical uses (rubidium-82 PET tracer, rubidium salts)n/a n/a basis Rubidium-82 is a short-lived isotope used as a blood-flow tracer in positron emission tomography heart scans. Rubidium salts have been studied for epilepsy, thyroid disorders and depression. Medical demand is small in tonnage but valuable. USGS MCS 2026, Rubidium Technetium-99m and other cardiac tracers
Other pharmaceuticals
Catalysts, pyrotechnics, ceramics and research (including quantum computing)n/a n/a basis Rubidium is used as a catalyst in ammonia synthesis, hydrogenation, oxidation, polymerisation and sulphuric acid making, gives violet hues in fireworks, and goes into rubidium-rich feldspar ceramics for spark plugs. Ultracold rubidium atoms are a workhorse of quantum research, a possible future source of larger demand. USGS MCS 2026, Rubidium Cesium and potassium compounds
Other atom species in quantum research
No official consumption data exist. USGS suggests US end-use consumption of under 2,000 kg of rubidium a year; world use is not published.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Pegmatite mining (historical) Lepidolite and pollucite in zoned pegmatites carry up to 3.5% and 1.5% Rb2O. No rubidium ore was mined anywhere in 2025 (USGS).
  2. 2. Stockpiles at former mines Ore stockpiled at Bikita (Zimbabwe), Sinclair (Australia) and Namibian sites feeds refineries; USGS warns these may soon be depleted.
  3. 3. Processing with cesium and lithium Rubidium is separated as a by-product when pollucite or lepidolite is processed for cesium or lithium.
  4. 4. Refining to compounds and metal Refined rubidium compounds are made in China and Germany (USGS); metal is sold in sealed ampoules.
  5. 5. End users Glassmakers, clock and sensor makers, medical and research laboratories. 1 g of 99.75% metal cost $138 in 2025.

Three things to know

  • No rubidium production was reported anywhere in the world in 2025; refiners worked from stockpiles.
  • The US Naval Observatory timescale relies on a network of clocks that includes six rubidium fountain clocks.
  • A Western Australian pilot test reported 97% rubidium recovery from ore holding about 7,900 t of rubidium oxide.
