Soda ash: Characteristics
The flux that lets sand melt into glass
What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).Supply volume characteristics
| Characteristic | Figure | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current production volume | about 71 Mt (2025e): 52 Mt synthetic, 19 Mt natural | China about 38 Mt (mostly synthetic), US 12 Mt (all natural, from Wyoming trona and California brine), Turkey 6 Mt (mostly natural). Together these three make about 80% of world output. | USGS MCS 2026, Soda ash |
| Inventory and stock levels | US producer stocks about 300 kt at end-2025, about 9 days of US output (derived) | US stocks rose from 245 kt in 2024. China's large producer and warehouse stocks reflect oversupply but are not in the sources reviewed. There is no exchange-registered stock outside China. | USGS MCS 2026 |
| Capacity utilisation | US about 86% (12 Mt output vs 13.9 Mt nameplate, 2025, derived); GHCL India about 98% (2025) | The global market was oversupplied in 2025: China added more than 7 Mt since 2023, including 5 Mt of natural capacity in Inner Mongolia. About 1 Mt of European synthetic capacity closed in January-July 2025. | USGS MCS 2026; Chemical Market Analytics, Sept 2025; content_v2 (GHCL) |
| Geographic and producer concentration | China about 54%, US 17%, Turkey 8%; top-3 about 79%; HHI at least about 3,200 (2025, derived) | Derived from USGS 2025 output; remaining 15 Mt is spread across many countries. Key firms include Genesis, Sisecam, Solvay and Tata Chemicals (US), WE Soda and Sisecam (Turkey) and Chinese producers. | USGS MCS 2026 |
| Supply elasticity | medium: new natural or synthetic plants take 3-5 years; China's additions show a strong long-run response | Synthetic plants can idle quickly when margins fall, as in Europe in 2025. Natural producers have lower costs and keep running. | USGS MCS 2026; Chemical Market Analytics 2025 |
| Project pipeline and CapEx | Solvay Green River +600 kt (by end-2025); WE Soda +1.2 Mt natural (2023-24); GHCL greenfield to 2.2 Mt/yr (Rs 6,500 crore) | Chinese natural and Hou-process additions of more than 7 Mt since 2023 dominate. Demand growth was only about 1.2% in 2025, so new capacity outpaces demand. | Chemical Market Analytics 2025; Chemical Week; content_v2 |
| Logistics and export flows | about 25% of output is traded; exports $4.03 billion (2024): US 42.5%, Turkey 23.2% | US soda ash moves by unit train from Wyoming to Pacific and Gulf ports, then by sea to Asia and Latin America. Turkish material ships to Europe and Asia. India imports about 25-26% of supply, mostly from China. | Chemical Market Analytics 2025; UN Comtrade 2024; content_v2 |
Material characteristics Industrial mineral
Soda ash is sodium carbonate, the alkali flux that lowers the melting point of silica in glass. Glassmakers want dense grade with very low iron and chloride. Detergent and chemical users take light grade. Natural soda ash from trona has very low chloride; synthetic Solvay ash carries residual salt. Purity, bulk density and impurities set use and price.
| Property | Value / specification | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purity | typically at least 99.2% Na2CO3 for technical grade (indicative) | Glass and chemicals need consistent alkali content | BIS IS 251 / producer specifications (indicative) |
| Bulk density (grade) | dense about 0.9-1.1 t/m3; light about 0.5-0.6 t/m3 (indicative) | Dense grade suits glass furnaces (less dust); light grade dissolves fast for detergents | Producer specifications (indicative) |
| Chloride (NaCl) | synthetic usually a few tenths of a percent; natural much lower (indicative) | Chloride corrodes furnaces and limits some chemical uses | Producer specifications (indicative) |
| Iron | glass grade typically under about 20 ppm Fe2O3 (indicative) | Iron tints glass green, critical for flat and solar glass | Producer specifications (indicative) |
| Ore yield (natural) | about 1.8 t trona per t soda ash | Sets mining volume and process CO2 from calcination | USGS MCS 2026 |
| Unit value | US average $150/t f.o.b. (2025), down from $211 in 2023 | Price benchmark for natural ash | USGS MCS 2026 |
