Soda ash: Overview

Why glass swallows nearly half of US soda ash

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Glass: flat glass for buildings, cars and solar panels; container glass; specialty glass45%about 2.1 Mt a year in the USbasis Soda ash lowers the melting point of silica sand to a workable range, cutting furnace energy, and is the standard flux in soda-lime glass. Solar glass is the fastest-growing outlet; GHCL expects about 1 Mt of extra Indian demand over five years, driven mainly by solar glass (Outlook Business, Oct 2025). Recycled cullet reduces soda ash need. USGS MCS 2026; Outlook Business, Oct 2025; Conway, Material World Cullet (recycled glass) reduces but does not replace soda ash
Sodium sulphate or caustic soda in small amounts
Chemicals: sodium silicates, bicarbonate, phosphates, chromates and lithium carbonate28%about 1.3 Mt a year in the USbasis Soda ash is the cheapest source of sodium carbonate chemistry. It precipitates lithium carbonate from brines in Chile and China, makes sodium bicarbonate for food and dialysis, and silicates for detergents and catalysts. Lithium refining has added a new, fast-growing outlet. USGS MCS 2026; Conway, Material World Caustic soda in some chemical sectors (USGS)
Chemical caustic made from soda ash itself
Soaps and detergents5%about 0.24 Mt a year in the USbasis Soda ash softens water and raises alkalinity in powder detergents and washing soda. Cheap powders in India and other emerging markets use more of it than liquid detergents do. USGS MCS 2026; Alchempro, June 2025 Zeolites and sodium silicate builders
Liquid detergents that need less alkali
Flue gas desulphurisation4%about 0.19 Mt a year in the USbasis Soda ash and trona react with sulphur dioxide in power plant and industrial flue gas. They are used where dry injection systems suit better than limestone scrubbers. USGS MCS 2026 Limestone and lime scrubbing
Sodium bicarbonate
Pulp and paper, and water treatment2%about 0.09 Mt a year in the USbasis Soda ash adjusts pH, makes up sodium losses in pulp mills and softens water. These are mature uses where caustic soda competes on price. USGS MCS 2026 Caustic soda (USGS)
Miscellaneous uses and sales through distributors16%about 0.75 Mt a year in the USbasis Includes metallurgy, food processing, textiles and small industrial buyers supplied by chemical distributors. USGS MCS 2026 Varies by use
US end-use shares in 2025 from quarterly reports (USGS MCS 2026). World demand was about 74 Mt in 2025 (Alchempro, June 2025); India accounts for about 6% and grows about 6% a year (GHCL via Outlook Business, Oct 2025).

From mine to user

  1. 1. Raw materials Natural: trona ore (Wyoming, Turkey, Inner Mongolia) or sodium carbonate brines. Synthetic: salt brine and limestone, plus ammonia as a recycled reagent. About 1.8 t of trona gives 1 t of soda ash (USGS).
  2. 2. Mining or brine supply Wyoming trona is mined underground by room and pillar with about 45% recovery, or solution-mined at about 30% (USGS). Synthetic plants pump brine from salt works, as at Mithapur in Gujarat.
  3. 3. Processing Trona is calcined, dissolved, filtered and recrystallised; synthetic plants run the Solvay ammonia-soda process. Natural soda ash costs roughly half as much to make as synthetic (GHCL via Outlook Business, 2025).
  4. 4. Product grades Dense soda ash for glass, light soda ash for detergents and chemicals; co-products include sodium bicarbonate and caustic soda.
  5. 5. Logistics and export US producers rail to West Coast and Gulf ports and exported more than half of the 12 Mt made in 2025; the US had 42.5% of world export value in 2024 (USGS; Comtrade).
  6. 6. Industrial customers Glassmakers, detergent makers, chemical plants and lithium refiners buy on annual contracts.
  7. 7. End of life Soda ash is consumed chemically; glass recycling (cullet) is the main way demand is reduced (USGS).

Three things to know

  • Glass takes 45% of US soda ash, and more than half of US output was exported in 2025.
  • Natural reserves are about 25 billion t, and 23 billion t of that is in the United States.
  • About 52 Mt of the world's 71 Mt of soda ash in 2025 was synthetic, mostly in China.
