Soda ash: Cycles

The 2021-23 price climb and the slide since

What this tab covers Price history and what drives booms and busts, including this commodity's super-cycles, the drivers behind them and the metrics to track. It charts monthly prices (World Bank) with a switch to inflation-adjusted annual prices; where there is no World Bank series it uses USGS US prices.

There is no World Bank price. The US average sales value rose from $133/t in 2021 to $211/t in 2023. It then fell to $169/t in 2024 and about $150/t in 2025. USGS attributes the 2025 decline to oversupply and weak demand, driven largely by new Chinese natural capacity. Demand follows flat-glass, container-glass and chemicals activity, so it tracks construction, cars and packaging. Natural producers sit at the low end of the cost curve, so synthetic plants absorb the downturns.

Super-cycles in soda ash

Soda ash follows glass, construction and chemicals demand, with prices set by the cost gap between natural and synthetic producers. Synthetic plants are the marginal suppliers, so energy costs set the ceiling. The 2021-2022 energy shock lifted prices to records; then China's new Inner Mongolia natural capacity and weak glass demand produced a glut from 2023. Over the long run, the story is technology: Leblanc, then Solvay, then low-cost natural trona, each lowering costs. No exchange price exists outside China.

  1. 1791-1900s

Leblanc's salt-and-sulphuric-acid process launched the modern chemicals industry; the cleaner Solvay process replaced it from the 1860s (Conway).

    No price series in sources.

  2. 2021-2022

Post-COVID glass demand, solar glass growth and Europe's energy crisis raised costs for synthetic producers and tightened supply.

US average sales value $133/t (2021) to $179/t (2022) and $211/t (2023) (USGS MCS 2026); Indian prices peaked in May 2022 (Alchempro).

  3. 2023-2025

About 5 Mt/yr of new natural capacity in Inner Mongolia from mid-2023, plus weak flat and container glass demand in China, the US and Europe, created oversupply.

US $169/t (2024) and about $150/t (2025) (USGS); China about $203/t (late March 2025) to $178/t (June 2025); Mumbai about Rs 29.5/kg in June 2025, about 45% below the May 2022 peak (Alchempro, June 2025).

What drives the cycle

  • Glass demand, especially solar glass. Glass takes about half of use; solar panel glass is the main growth driver in China and India.
  • Energy and CO2 costs. Synthetic plants are energy-intensive, so gas and coal prices set the marginal cost; UK's Lostock closed in 2025.
  • Chinese capacity. China has about 45% of global capacity (GHCL, 2025); new natural plants push down world prices.
  • Lithium carbonate production. Each tonne of lithium carbonate from brine needs soda ash, linking demand to battery cycles.
  • Trade defence. India's MIP and anti-dumping probes and US-China tariffs redirect flows.
