Vanadium: Cycles

How Chinese pentoxide prices fell by almost half

What this tab covers Price history and what drives booms and busts, including this commodity's super-cycles, the drivers behind them and the metrics to track. It charts monthly prices (World Bank) with a switch to inflation-adjusted annual prices; where there is no World Bank series it uses USGS US prices.

Vanadium has no World Bank price series. USGS, citing Argus, reports that Chinese vanadium pentoxide averaged $9.29 a pound in 2022 and fell to $5.02 in 2025, a drop of 46%. US ferrovanadium firmed, from $13.05 to $14.14 a pound between 2024 and 2025. Prices swing with steel output and with rules on how much vanadium goes into steel such as rebar. Supply cannot respond quickly, because most vanadium is a by-product. Grid-scale flow batteries are a possible new source of demand, but they face high costs and competing chemistries.

Super-cycles in vanadium

Vanadium prices swing hard because supply is mostly a steel co-product and demand is tied to Chinese construction steel. The metal's first boom came with Ford's vanadium-steel Model T: US auto steel demand rose from a few thousand tonnes in 1900 to over 70,000 t in 1910 (Smil). Recent prices have trended down as Chinese and Russian supply grew and steel demand weakened, while flow batteries are a possible new demand driver. A long-run price series was not available in the sources used; the USGS Chinese V2O5 price fell from $9.29/lb in 2022 to $5.02/lb in 2025.

  1. 1908-1920s

Ford adopted vanadium steel for axles, shafts and springs in the Model T, and SAE standardised chromium-vanadium steels in 1912 (Smil 2016).

Price data for this period were not available in the sources used

  2. 2021-2022

Post-pandemic recovery in steel output lifted demand.

    Chinese V2O5 rose from $8.17/lb (2021) to $9.29/lb (2022) (USGS, Argus)

  3. 2023-2025

Oversupply from Chinese and Russian producers and weak steel and construction demand pushed prices to multi-year lows (Largo).

    Chinese V2O5 fell to $7.50/lb (2023), $5.44/lb (2024) and $5.02/lb (2025); US ferrovanadium rose slightly to $14.14/lb in 2025 (USGS)

  4. Late 2025-2026

US tariffs of 50% on Brazilian high-purity vanadium from August 2025 disrupted aerospace supply, and European prices edged up.

    European V2O5 benchmark rose from $5.13/lb (Q2 2025) to $5.86/lb (Q4 2025) (Largo)

What drives the cycle

  • Chinese steel output and rebar standards. HSLA and construction steel are the largest use (64% in the EU), and China sets both demand and most supply.
  • Co-product supply from steel slag. Supply follows Chinese and Russian steel decisions, not vanadium prices.
  • Grid storage policy. Wider adoption of vanadium flow batteries could add a large new demand stream.
  • Aerospace build rates. Titanium alloy demand needs high-purity vanadium with no substitute.
  • Trade policy. Tariffs and sanctions on Russian and Brazilian supply affect Western buyers.
