Wheat: Movement

Why the biggest exporter is missing from the trade data

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

World exports of wheat (HS 1001) were worth $42.6 billion in 2024. Canada supplied 17.7%, the United States 14.0%, Australia 13.1%, Ukraine 8.8%, France 8.7% and Argentina 4.6%. Russia, the largest exporter by volume, is missing because it stopped reporting detailed trade data. Importers are Egypt (9.3%), Indonesia (7.6%), China (7.3%), Algeria (6.3%), Italy (5.7%) and the Philippines (4.3%). Black Sea grain must pass the Turkish Straits, and Asian cargoes often use Suez. Export curbs recur: Russia's 2010 ban, its later export quotas and duties, and India's 2022 ban.
