Wollastonite: Extraction
How heat and fluids turn limestone into mineral needles
What this tab covers How it is mined, drilled or grown, and processed into a tradeable form: the main methods compared, their unit economics, by-products, and the companies that do this work globally and in India.Wollastonite is a calcium silicate that forms when siliceous limestone is baked by regional metamorphism or altered by silica-rich fluids near magmatic intrusions. The ore is mined in open pits, crushed and cleaned of minerals such as garnet and diopside, then ground. Value depends on particle shape more than tonnage. Finer and more elongated, needle-like grades command higher prices, and surface coatings that help the mineral bond to polymers add more. In the United States, deposits are known in seven states, but only New York has seen long-term continuous mining.
Wollastonite is a small industrial mineral: about 860,000 t a year outside the US, about 70% of it from China. All of it is mined in open pits from skarn deposits. Value is added in the mill, not the mine. A coarse powder for tiles sells for little, while fine acicular and surface-treated grades for plastics and friction products sell at many times the mine-head value. Price data are not published, so unit economics come from Indian official values.
Methods compared
| Method | Share of supply | Typical scale | Recovery / efficiency | By-products | Unit cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open-pit skarn mining with dry processing for ceramic grades | most world supply (China, India, Mexico about 95% of the 860,000 t non-US total, 2025, USGS) | Udaipur district (Wolkem) mined 107,785 t in 2021-22 (IBM) | n/a | n/a | India mine-head value about Rs 920/t in 2021-22 (indicative, basis: IBM production value / quantity) |
| Fine grinding to acicular and surface-treated grades | not published | India exported 11,705 t of finished grades in 2021-22 (IBM) | n/a | n/a | India export unit value about Rs 24,100/t vs import (from China) about Rs 22,100/t in 2021-22 (indicative, basis: IBM trade value / quantity) |
How each method works
Open-pit skarn mining with dry processing for ceramic gradesOre is drilled, blasted and hauled from shallow pits, crushed, cleaned of garnet, diopside and calcite, and dry-ground to powder for tile and frit makers. This is the bulk route in China, India and Mexico.
Cheap and simple; low value limits haul distance.
USGS MCS 2026; IBM Indian Minerals Yearbook 2022 Fine grinding to acicular and surface-treated gradesSelected concentrate is ground in mills designed to keep the needle shape, classified by particle size and aspect ratio, and sometimes coated with silanes for polymer use.
Large mark-up on mine value; needs consistent ore and grinding know-how.

India is the second largest producer, at 120,000 t in 2025 (USGS), all from Rajasthan. Reserves are 2.68 Mt within 25.1 Mt of total resources (IBM, 1 April 2020). India is a net importer by tonnage: 30,625 t imported (99% from China) against 11,705 t exported in 2021-22 (IBM).
