Wollastonite: Overview

The surprising list of everyday things this mineral strengthens

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Ceramics (floor and wall tiles, frits, sanitaryware)n/a n/a basis Wollastonite is a natural calcium silicate, so it supplies lime and silica without releasing gas on firing. That cuts shrinkage, cracking and glaze defects, raises strength and allows fast firing cycles, which suits high-volume tile plants. USGS MCS 2026, Wollastonite; IBM Indian Minerals Yearbook 2022, Wollastonite Carbonates (limestone, dolomite)
Feldspar
Lime
Silica
Plastics and rubber (filler and reinforcement)n/a n/a basis Its needle-shaped (acicular) particles reinforce thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers, raising tensile and flexural strength and heat stability while replacing some resin. Surface-treated grades bond better to the polymer. USGS MCS 2026, Wollastonite Glass fibre
Talc, kaolin and mica
Calcium carbonate and barite
Paints and coatingsn/a n/a basis As an extender it toughens the paint film, buffers pH, improves weathering, reduces gloss and lets makers use less costly pigment. USGS MCS 2026, Wollastonite Calcium carbonate
Talc
Kaolin
Friction products (brake linings) and asbestos replacementn/a n/a basis It is fibrous like asbestos but not a health hazard, stable at high temperature and resistant to chemicals. The 2024 US ban on chrysotile in brakes and gaskets could lift demand. USGS MCS 2026, Wollastonite and Asbestos Aramid and other organic fibres
Steel and ceramic fibres
Glass fibre
Metallurgy (welding flux, slag conditioner, continuous-casting powders)n/a n/a basis It provides calcium oxide and silica in a clean, low-loss form, conditions slag and protects the molten steel surface in continuous casting. USGS MCS 2026, Wollastonite Lime plus silica
Synthetic mould powders
Construction products (cement board, adhesives, sealants, stucco)n/a n/a basis Acicular particles add crack resistance and dimensional stability to boards, caulks and adhesives, and replaced asbestos in asbestos-cement type boards. USGS MCS 2026; IBM Indian Minerals Yearbook 2022 Cellulose and polymer fibres
Calcium carbonate and talc fillers
No source publishes end-use shares. USGS says ceramics, paint and polymers take most global sales, with smaller construction, friction, metallurgical and paper uses. India's IBM says ceramics take the bulk of Indian use.

From mine to user

  1. Deposit Wollastonite forms where siliceous limestone is metamorphosed or altered by silica-rich fluids near intrusions (USGS).
  2. Open-pit mining India's output of 108,383 t in 2021-22 came from three private mines in Rajasthan, almost all from Udaipur district (IBM).
  3. Beneficiation Ore is crushed and cleaned of associated minerals to a high-brightness concentrate.
  4. Grinding and classification Concentrate is milled to powders or to high aspect ratio (acicular) grades; finer and more acicular grades sell for more (USGS).
  5. Surface treatment Some grades are coated to bond with polymers, which raises the selling price (USGS).
  6. Sale and export Bagged product goes to tile, plastics, paint and brake makers; India exported 11,705 t in 2021-22, 57% to Belgium (IBM).

Three things to know

  • China mined about 600,000 t of wollastonite in 2025, roughly 70% of the reported world total.
  • About 68 people worked at US wollastonite mines and mills in 2025, all in New York.
  • The 2024 US ban on chrysotile asbestos could push more wollastonite into brake and friction products.
