Zirconium: Characteristics

Whiteness for tiles and neutron transparency for reactors

What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).

Supply volume characteristics

CharacteristicFigureWhat it meansSource
Current production volumeabout 1.2 Mt zircon concentrate gross weight (2025e), down 12% from 1.3 Mt in 2024Australia (400 kt) and South Africa (270 kt) lead. Zirconium metal is a small slice: about 3% of zircon goes to metal for nuclear cladding and alloys.USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM 2023
Inventory and stock levelsnot publishedNo exchange or government stock data exist. Producers hold stocks to manage prices: Iluka held back inventory and cut prices in 2013-16 when Chinese tile demand fell. Zircon foundry cores and spent zirconia refractories are often recycled but not quantified.USGS MCS 2026; Iluka (2018)
Capacity utilisationnot publishedUSGS gives no zircon capacity. The 12% fall in 2025 mine output reflects mine sequencing and weaker Chinese demand, not a reported utilisation rate. Zircon output is set by the titanium mining plan at each mine.USGS MCS 2026
Geographic and producer concentrationAustralia 32%, top 3 (Australia, South Africa, Mozambique) 67%, HHI about 1,900 (2025, derived); WMD 2024 HHI 1,591Company concentration is higher than country: Iluka 26%, Rio Tinto 19%, Tronox 14% and Cristal 6% held about 65% of output in 2013. Demand is also concentrated: China takes 62.5% of world imports by value.USGS MCS 2026 (derived); World Mining Data 2026; Tilton and Guzman (2016); UN Comtrade 2024
Supply elasticitylow: zircon is a co-product (companionality about 95%) and new mineral sands mines take 3-7 yearsA higher zircon price does not change how much sand a mine digs, since the plan is set by the combined titanium and zircon basket. Producers can release stocks in the short run.EU CRM 2023; USGS MCS 2026
Project pipeline and CapExprojects in Australia, Mozambique, South Africa, Sri Lanka and TanzaniaUSGS lists exploration and development projects in these countries but gives no capacities. Kenmare's Moma (50 kt zircon in 2025) and Iluka's Australian operations are the established base.USGS MCS 2026; Kenmare 2025; Iluka 2025
Logistics and export flowsworld zircon ore exports (HS 261510) about $1.4 billion (2024); South Africa 43.5%China takes 62.5% of imports, India 8.1% and Spain 6.8%, the tile hubs. Zircon moves in bulk and bags from Richards Bay, Western Australian ports and Mozambique to Chinese and Indian millers. Concentrated buying by Chinese ceramics is the main demand chokepoint.UN Comtrade 2024; USGS MCS 2026

Material characteristics Industrial mineral

Zircon (zirconium silicate) sells on whiteness, chemistry and heat resistance. Ceramic glaze makers want low iron and titanium so the opacifier stays white; foundries want a stable, low-expansion sand that resists molten metal; refractories want high melting point. Zirconium metal sells on its near-transparency to neutrons and corrosion resistance, which is why nuclear fuel cladding must be hafnium-free.

PropertyValue / specificationWhy it mattersSource
Grade (ZrO2 + HfO2 content)Premium zircon at least 66% ZrO2+HfO2; standard about 65%Premium grade sets the benchmark price (CIF China) and suits ceramicsFastmarkets IM price basis via USGS MCS 2026
Colouring impuritiesFe2O3 roughly 0.05-0.10% and TiO2 roughly 0.10-0.15% maximum for premium ceramic grades (indicative)Iron and titanium tint glazes, so they decide whether sand is ceramic or foundry gradeProducer specifications (Iluka, indicative)
Particle sizeSand about 100-150 microns; flour under 45 microns; micronised opacifier d50 about 1-5 micronsFine milling raises opacity in glazes; sand size matters for foundry mould finishIndustry practice (indicative)
Refractive indexabout 1.92-1.96High enough to scatter light in glass glazes, making zircon the standard opacifierCRC Handbook
Heat resistanceZircon dissociates above about 1,670 C; zirconia melts at 2,715 C; low thermal expansionUsed in glass-furnace refractories and foundry moulds that see molten metalCRC Handbook
RadioactivityNatural uranium plus thorium, typically a few hundred ppmMust be managed for worker exposure and transport rules (IAEA NORM guidance); low-radioactivity grades are preferredIAEA NORM guidance (indicative)
Neutron absorption and nuclear gradeZirconium thermal capture cross-section 0.18 barn (hafnium about 104); reactor-grade metal at most 100 ppm Hf (ASTM B349/B350 R60001)Lets neutrons pass through fuel cladding; hafnium must be removedASTM B350; CRC Handbook
Alloy composition (Zircaloy-4)Sn 1.2-1.7%, Fe 0.18-0.24%, Cr 0.07-0.13%The standard cladding alloy for water reactors; composition controls corrosion and creepASTM B350/B811
