Bioethanol: Production
America's maize belt, Brazil's cane and India's distillery boom
America's maize belt, Brazil's cane and India's distillery boom What this tab covers Who makes it and how much: world capacity and output, utilisation, the top producing countries and companies globally and in India, concentration, new capacity coming, and each region's position.| Measure | Figure | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| World capacity | US 18.44 billion gallons a year at 189 plants (1 Jan 2026); India's sugar-industry distillery capacity 853 crore litres a year plus grain distilleries | EIA via OPIS, Sep 2026; sugar tile (ISMA) | |
| World output | 32.0 billion gallons (121 billion litres, about 96 Mt) of fuel ethanol in 2025 | RFA, Annual World Fuel Ethanol Production (2026) | |
| Capacity utilisation | US about 89% in 2025 (16.49 of 18.44 billion gallons, derived) | India has surplus distillery capacity: OMCs contracted 1,048 crore litres for ESY 2025-26 and distilleries had supplied 895 crore litres by end-August 2026, while grain distillers say the 2026-27 maize price cut squeezes margins. | RFA; EIA via OPIS; Autocar Pro Sep 2026; ThePrint Oct 2026 |
| Concentration | top country 52%, top three 87% (2025); top-five company share not published | US output is spread over 189 plants; POET, Valero, ADM and Green Plains are the largest owners. Brazil is led by Raízen; India's supply comes from hundreds of sugar-mill and grain distilleries. | RFA 2026; EIA via OPIS 2026 |
| New capacity | growth to 2030 comes mainly from India (E20 to E27/E30 discussion), Brazil corn ethanol and Brazil's E30, plus ATJ SAF | Brazil's Mato Grosso corn ethanol plants are expanding (maize tile). India's 2026-27 tender is for about 1,100 crore litres, similar to 2025-26 contracts. LanzaJet and others are building alcohol-to-jet units (indicative). | ThePrint Oct 2026; maize tile; indicative |

India is the third-largest producer at 9.8 billion litres (RFA 2025) and is self-sufficient in fuel ethanol, but imports denatured ethanol for industry (0.68 Mt in 2024, UN Comtrade). Feedstock policy, not capacity, limits output: maize demand from distilleries tightened the feed market and sugar-based ethanol was barred for 2026-27.
Position by region
| Region | Position |
|---|---|
| US | Largest producer and exporter (24% of undenatured and 73% of denatured ethanol export value in 2024, UN Comtrade); demand set by the RFS 15-billion-gallon conventional volume and E15. |
| EU | Produces 5.7 billion litres and imports from the US and Brazil; RED III caps crop biofuels and rewards higher GHG savings. |
| India | E20 reached in 2025; 2026-27 supply must come from maize, FCI rice, damaged grain and C-heavy molasses at Rs 68.86 per litre for maize ethanol. |
| China | Fourth-largest producer (3.9 billion litres in 2025) from maize and cassava; national E10 has stalled outside some provinces (indicative). |
| Japan | Imports ethanol and ETBE for petrol (7% of HS 220710 import value in 2024, UN Comtrade). |
| Middle East | Little production; not a market except as a petrol exporter. |
