DAP and MAP: Production
Where 8 Mt of new phosphate capacity is coming
What this tab covers Who makes it and how much: world capacity and output, utilisation, the top producing countries and companies globally and in India, concentration, new capacity coming, and each region's position.| Measure | Figure | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| World capacity | 63.7 Mt P2O5 of phosphate fertiliser capacity (2025), rising to 71.7 Mt by 2029 | USGS MCS 2026, Phosphate Rock | |
| World output | about 60 Mt of DAP and MAP product a year (indicative, derived); 47.8 Mt P2O5 used in all phosphate fertilisers in 2025 | USGS MCS 2026; derived | |
| Capacity utilisation | about 75% (47.8 Mt P2O5 use against 63.7 Mt capacity, 2025) | Derived and approximate. Nutrien ran its phosphate plants at 80% in 2025; China's export licences rather than plant availability limit seaborne supply. | USGS MCS 2026 (derived); Nutrien 2025 MD&A |
| Concentration | rock: China 44.1%, top-3 66.4% (2024); DAP export supply is concentrated in Morocco, China, Saudi Arabia and Russia | Country DAP output shares are not published in free sources. Firm-level shares are not published consistently. | World Mining Data 2026; USGS MCS 2026 |
| New capacity | phosphate capacity to rise from 63.7 to 71.7 Mt P2O5 by 2029 | Rock expansions in Brazil, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Morocco and Russia by 2028; Coromandel's 650 tpd phosphoric acid plant at Kakinada; India signed long-term phosphate supply agreements in 2025 (Argus, Jul 2025). | USGS MCS 2026; Coromandel FY26 results; Argus (Jul 2025) |
Top producing countries
- China: largest producer; mines 110 Mt of rock (44% of world)
- Morocco: largest exporter of rock, acid and DAP/MAP; 36 Mt rock
- United States: Mosaic and Nutrien; 20 Mt rock
- Russia: PhosAgro and others; 14 Mt rock
- Saudi Arabia: Ma'aden at Ras Al Khair; 10 Mt rock
- India: 3.90 Mt DAP made in FY2026
Largest producers: global
| Company | Country | Volume | Year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OCP Group largest exporter; DAP+MAP exports up 5% in Jan-Aug 2025 (CRU) | Morocco | not published | 2025 | Volume not published; revenue $9.04 billion in Jan-Sep 2025 (North Africa Post) |
| Mosaic | US | 6.3 Mt phosphate products produced (DAP sales 5.9 Mt) | 2025 | Mosaic Q4 2025 results |
| Nutrien | Canada | 2.36 Mt phosphate products sold (1.36 Mt P2O5 produced) | 2025 | Nutrien 2025 MD&A |
| Ma'aden integrated rock, sulphur and ammonia; Gulf exports exposed to 2026 Hormuz disruption | Saudi Arabia | not published | 2025 | not verified |
| PhosAgro Kola apatite, low-cadmium product | Russia | not published | 2025 | not verified |
| Yuntianhua and other Chinese producers exports allowed only June-October 2025 (CRU) | China | not published | 2025 | not verified |
Largest producers: India
| Company | Country | Volume | Year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IFFCO Paradeep and Kandla | India | 4.23 Mt NPK, DAP and specialty fertilisers produced | FY2026 | Indian Cooperative, IFFCO FY2025-26 results |
| Coromandel International added a 650 tpd phosphoric acid plant at Kakinada | India | 4.3 Mt phosphatic fertiliser sold | FY2026 | Coromandel FY26 results |
| Paradeep Phosphates | India | 3.666 Mt fertiliser produced (capacity 3.67 Mtpa) | FY2026 | Indian Chemical News, FY26 results |
| Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals importer and marketer | India | 0.458 Mt DAP sold (mainly imported) | FY2026 | Chambal MD&A FY2026 |
India sold 9.40 Mt of DAP in FY2026, made 3.90 Mt and imported 6.22 Mt (Chambal MD&A). Even domestic DAP relies on imported rock, phosphoric acid, sulphur and ammonia, so India's real import dependence is close to total.
Position by region
| Region | Position |
|---|---|
| US | Mosaic and Nutrien make DAP/MAP from Florida, North Carolina and Idaho rock; DAP imports were at a decade low in Jan-Jul 2025 because of duties on Moroccan and Russian product (CRU, 2025). |
| EU | Imports most of its phosphate; low-cadmium Russian and Finnish material is preferred under the 60 mg Cd/kg P2O5 limit (EU 2019/1009). |
| India | Largest DAP importer (6.22 Mt in FY2026); the government absorbs world price moves through the NBS subsidy. |
| China | Largest producer; export licences issued only from June to October 2025, which tightened world supply (CRU). |
| Japan | No phosphate mining; imports DAP and acid (USGS 2026). |
| Middle East | Saudi Arabia (Ma'aden) and Jordan export DAP and acid; Gulf shipping was disrupted from February 2026. |
