Pharma starting materials and intermediates: Cycles

How Chinese supply waves swing starting material prices

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

KSM prices swing more than API prices because Chinese supply responds in waves. Environmental crackdowns (2017-2018) and lockdowns (2020) raised prices; expansions and post-PLI price cutting (2022-2025) pushed them down 40-50% on some products. Indian KSM plants have struggled whenever Chinese prices fall below Indian cash cost, which is why India stopped making penicillin G in the 2000s and restarted only with PLI subsidies.

The spread to watch Import parity minus Indian cash cost

Not published. The MIP levels (Rs 2,216-3,405/kg) indicate where Indian producers need prices to be.

Booms and busts

  1. 2017-2018

Chinese environmental inspections cut intermediate output and raised prices for Indian API makers.

  2. 2020

Hubei lockdown disrupted KSM shipments; India curbed exports of 26 APIs and formulations.

API prices rose 62-189% between January and April 2020 for some products (Tribune, Apr 2020)

  3. 2022-2025

After India's PLI launch, Chinese import volumes for some APIs rose 30-45% and prices fell 40-50%.

  4. 2026

DGFT minimum import prices on penicillin G, 6-APA and amoxicillin; DGTR anti-dumping probes on the same products.

MIP 6-APA Rs 3,405/kg (Medical Dialogues, Jan 2026)

What drives the cycle

  • Chinese environmental and industrial policy. Closures or consolidation of chemical parks change KSM supply quickly.
  • Indian trade remedies. MIPs and duties set a floor for domestic producers.
  • Generic API volumes. Demand follows paracetamol, metformin and antibiotic consumption.
