PHA bioplastics: Cycles

A venture-capital boom and bust, not a price cycle

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

PHA has had a venture-capital cycle rather than a price cycle. Waves of investment (Metabolix and ADM's Telles joint venture in 2010-2012, the SPAC boom of 2020-2021) built plants ahead of demand; when buyers would not pay several times the price of PE and customers' trials did not convert to volume, cash ran out. Yield10 failed in December 2024 and Danimer in March 2025. Prices are not public. The floor is set by fermentation cost, the ceiling by what brands pay for marine and home compostability, and by regulation that does or does not exempt PHA from single-use plastic bans.

The spread to watch PHA price minus feedstock cost

Not published. Feedstock alone at about 1-1.5 t of vegetable oil per t PHA (indicative) and oil at $900-1,800/t is roughly $900-2,700/t before fermentation and extraction.

Booms and busts

  1. 2010-2012

Metabolix and ADM built a 50 kt/yr PHA plant (Telles) in Clinton, Iowa; ADM ended the venture in 2012 because demand and economics fell short (indicative).

    not public

  2. 2020-2021

Danimer listed via SPAC in December 2020, raising about $380 million, and Georgia announced a $700 million Bainbridge expansion in 2021.

  3. 2024-2025

Yield10 filed for bankruptcy in December 2024; Danimer filed for Chapter 11 on 18 March 2025, cut staff from 170 to 82 and sold to Teknor Apex for $19 million, about 4.7% of its $402 million debt.

What drives the cycle

  • Regulatory treatment. Whether single-use plastic rules exempt home- and marine-degradable materials decides demand.
  • Brand commitments. Early volumes depend on a few brands' trials converting to contracts.
  • Cost of capital. First-of-a-kind plants need patient money; the SPAC route failed.
  • Vegetable oil and sugar prices. Large share of cost.
