Phosphoric acid: Relationships
Every element and industry that Phosphoric acid is linked to, and how. Each pair has its own card explaining the relationships between the two.
- DAP and MAP: DAP and MAP are phosphoric acid neutralised with ammonia, so acid is their main input and price driver. For India the choice is between importing finished DAP, importing acid and granulating at home, or importing rock and making acid, and its quarterly acid contract with Moroccan and Jordanian suppliers is a key cost benchmark. - Phosphate rock: Phosphoric acid is the step through which almost all mined phosphate reaches fertiliser: rock is dissolved in sulphuric acid, and roughly three tonnes of rock go into each tonne of P2O5. Integrated producers turn most of their rock into acid before it leaves the country, as with over 95% of US-mined rock in 2025, while India imports rock, acid and DAP. (researched)
- Sulphuric acid: Wet-process phosphoric acid is made by dissolving phosphate rock in sulphuric acid, so large phosphoric acid plants usually run their own sulphuric acid plant beside them. That makes sulphur a direct cost of phosphate fertiliser: the 2026 sulphur spike lifted India's phosphoric acid contract by $340 a tonne of P2O5 in one quarter. (researched)
- Ammonia: Their prices have moved together.
- Gypsum: Their prices have moved together.
- Lithium iron phosphate batteries: Their prices have moved together.
- Sulfur: Sulfur is a raw material for phosphoric acid.
