Plasticisers: Overview
Where soft plastic hides: cables, floors, film and tubes
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.Plasticisers are high-boiling esters mixed into PVC at 20-50% of the compound to make it flexible. Most are made by reacting an acid or anhydride (phthalic anhydride, terephthalic acid, trimellitic anhydride, adipic acid) with a C8-C10 alcohol such as 2-ethylhexanol. Flexible PVC takes 80-90% of demand. World use is roughly 9-10 Mt a year, worth about $11-14 billion (indicative). China consumes over half. Regulation has pushed demand from DEHP (DOP) towards DINP, DOTP and DINCH, and India is one of the few places where DOP still dominates.
Volume about 9-10 Mt a year (2024, indicative: widely cited industry estimates; no public total retrieved) Market value about $11-14 billion (2024, indicative: 9.5 Mt x about $1.2-1.5/kg) Growth about 3.5% a year (S&P Global CEH, 2021 forecast); 2026 outlook flat to weak with ample supply (ResourceWise, Dec 2025) S&P Global Chemical Economics Handbook: Plasticizers (May 2021 summary); ResourceWise, Global Plasticizers Market 2025 Review and 2026 Outlook (5 Dec 2025)Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flexible PVC: wire and cable insulation and sheathing | n/a | part of about 8 Mt for flexible PVCbasis | Cable compounds need flexibility, low volatility and heat resistance; DINP, DIDP, DOTP and trimellitates (TOTM) for high-temperature grades are used. Power and data cable growth, including India's grid build-out, drives demand. S&P Global CEH (2021) | Polyethylene and cross-linked polyolefin insulation Halogen-free compounds |
| Flexible PVC: flooring, wallcovering and roofing membranes | n/a | part of about 8 Mtbasis | Vinyl flooring and luxury vinyl tiles use plasticised PVC layers; low cost and durability keep PVC competitive. S&P Global CEH (2021) | Linoleum Polyolefin and rigid-core flooring |
| Flexible PVC: film, sheet, coated fabrics and synthetic leather | n/a | part of about 8 Mtbasis | Calendered film for packaging, stationery, car interiors and artificial leather uses large loadings; India's footwear and leather-cloth industry is a big DOP user. S&P Global CEH (2021) | Polyurethane synthetic leather Polyolefin films |
| Flexible PVC: medical devices, hoses, gloves, toys and footwear | n/a | part of about 8 Mtbasis | Blood bags, tubing and gloves need clarity and flexibility; regulation steers these to DEHT (DOTP), DINCH and citrates. ResourceWise names gloves, toys and flooring as end uses. S&P Global CEH (2021); ResourceWise (2025) | Silicone and TPE tubing Nitrile gloves |
| Non-PVC: rubbers, polyurethanes, adhesives, sealants, coatings and inks | 15% | about 1.4 Mtbasis | Plasticisers soften nitrile rubber, cellulose and acrylic polymers and lower viscosity in sealants and inks; adipates, benzoates and phosphates are common. derived from S&P Global CEH (2021) | Process oils in rubber Reactive diluents |
From raw material to user
- Aromatics and olefins o-Xylene oxidised to phthalic anhydride; p-xylene to PTA; propylene hydroformylated (rhodium catalyst) to butyraldehyde and then 2-ethylhexanol; butenes to isononanol.
- Esterification Acid or anhydride plus alcohol over a titanate or acid catalyst at about 200-230 C (indicative); 1 t DOP takes about 0.38 t phthalic anhydride and 0.67 t 2-EH (stoichiometry).
- Finishing Excess alcohol stripped and recycled, product neutralised, filtered and shipped as a clear liquid.
- Compounding PVC resin, plasticiser (20-50% of compound), stabilisers and fillers are dry-blended and extruded or calendered (indicative).
- End products and end of life Cables, floors and films last years to decades; plasticisers slowly migrate out; PVC is mostly landfilled or incinerated.

Oil Crude oilThree things to know
- Flexible PVC takes 80-90% of plasticisers (S&P Global, 2021).
- Orthophthalates fell from about 60-65% to just over 55% of world use by 2020 as rules pushed DOTP, DINCH and others (S&P Global).
- India imposed anti-dumping duty of $40.08/t on Chinese and $140.17/t on Korean phthalic anhydride for five years from August 2026 (Notification 20/2026-Customs (ADD)).
