Polycarbonate: Overview

From laptop chargers to headlamps and roofing sheets

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Polycarbonate (PC) is made by linking bisphenol A (BPA) with either phosgene or diphenyl carbonate. It is transparent, very tough and heat-resistant, so it replaces glass in headlamp lenses, roofing sheets, safety glazing and device housings. Global demand including blends passed 5 Mt for the first time in 2024, at 5.2 Mt, against about 7.7 Mt of capacity, with about 4% a year growth expected (Plastics Insights via findoutaboutplastics, Nov 2025). China went from 5 polymerisation plants in 2015 to 17. India imports all of its PC, more than 300 kt a year, until Deepak Chem Tech's 165 kt/yr plant starts in FY2027-28 to FY2028-29.

Volume about 5.2 Mt of demand including blends (2024) Market value about $10 billion (2024, indicative, basis: 5.2 Mt x about $2,000/t) Growth about 4% a year Plastics Insights via findoutaboutplastics.com, Nov 2025; value indicative

From raw material to user

  1. Benzene and propylene to phenol and acetone Cumene process; about 0.87 t benzene and 0.47 t propylene per t phenol (phenol tile).
  2. Bisphenol A About 0.84 t phenol and 0.26 t acetone per t BPA (BPA tile); polycarbonate takes 62% of BPA.
  3. Carbonate source Phosgene from carbon monoxide and chlorine (interfacial route) or diphenyl carbonate (melt route).
  4. Polymerisation About 0.9 t BPA per t PC (stoichiometric).
  5. Compounding and sheet extrusion Blends with ABS or PBT, flame retardants and UV stabilisers; sheet is extruded and coated.

Three things to know

  • Global PC demand including blends reached 5.2 Mt in 2024 against about 7.7 Mt of capacity; Covestro and SABIC hold over 40% of capacity (Plastics Insights via findoutaboutplastics, Nov 2025).
  • China's PC exports doubled from about 250 kt/yr to 500 kt/yr as its plants grew from 5 to 17 (same source).
  • India imports all of its PC, more than 300 kt a year; Deepak Chem Tech's 165 kt/yr Dahej plant, built with Trinseo's Stade equipment, is due in FY2027-28 to FY2028-29 (Deepak Nitrite, 2024-2026).
