Polycarbonate: Production
Why the world has far more plants than it needs
What this tab covers Who makes it and how much: world capacity and output, utilisation, the top producing countries and companies globally and in India, concentration, new capacity coming, and each region's position.| Measure | Figure | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| World capacity | about 7.7 Mt/yr (2024, sum of regional figures: Asia-Pacific 5.5 Mt, EMEA 1.4 Mt, Americas 0.8 Mt); the 5.2 Mt headline in the same source matches demand, not capacity | Plastics Insights via findoutaboutplastics.com, Nov 2025 | |
| World output | about 5.2 Mt (2024, demand including blends) | Plastics Insights via findoutaboutplastics.com, Nov 2025 | |
| Capacity utilisation | about 65-70% (derived, indicative: 5.2 Mt demand against about 7.7 Mt regional capacity) | Chinese additions since 2019 left Asia long; Western producers closed lines (SABIC Cartagena, Trinseo Stade). | derived from findoutaboutplastics.com, Nov 2025 |
| Concentration | China about 45% of capacity; Covestro and SABIC together over 40% of global capacity | Other leaders: Wanhua, Lotte Chemical, Mitsubishi Chemical, Teijin, Chimei, Zhejiang Petrochemical, Hengli, Sinopec-SABIC Tianjin. | Plastics Insights via findoutaboutplastics.com, Nov 2025 |
| New capacity | Pingmei Shenma 0.1 to 0.4 Mt/yr; Chinese projects continue; Asian BPA additions 2.69 Mt/yr to 2030 (GlobalData via BPA tile) | Western capacity is shrinking (SABIC Cartagena lines closed by end-2023, Trinseo stopped PC at Stade). New capacity is almost all in China, plus India's DCTL (165 kt/yr, due FY2027-28 to FY2028-29). | findoutaboutplastics.com, Nov 2025; BPA tile |
Top producing countries
