Polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE): Overview
Why soft polyethylene wraps almost everything you buy
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.LDPE and LLDPE are made by polymerising ethylene, LDPE at very high pressure and LLDPE at low pressure with a butene, hexene or octene comonomer. Together they made about 60 Mt in 2024, about 14% of the world's 431 Mt of plastics. Two-thirds becomes film: food wraps, pouches, stretch and shrink film, carry bags and farm film. Cost is mostly ethylene, so the cheapest producers sit on Gulf and US ethane. For a climate fund the issue is the end of life: thin, dirty, multilayer film is the hardest plastic to recycle.
Volume about 60 Mt a year of LDPE plus LLDPE (2024, indicative: 14% x 430.9 Mt); roughly 38 Mt LLDPE and 22 Mt LDPE (indicative split) Market value about $55-65 billion a year (indicative: 60 Mt x $900-1,100/t, 2024-2025 CFR Asia levels) Growth PE demand forecast to grow about 3.5% a year to 2029, after only 1.9% a year in the past five years while capacity grew 3.8% a year Plastics Europe Fast Facts 2025 via Chemical Week, Oct 2025 (total plastics); polymer share indicative (Plastics Europe Fast Facts, LDPE/LLDPE about 14%); Argus, Feb 2026 (growth); value derived (indicative)Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flexible packaging film (food and consumer packs, stretch and shrink film, carry bags, sacks) | 65% | about 39 Mtbasis | LLDPE gives puncture and tear resistance at thin gauges and seals well; LDPE adds clarity and easy processing on blown-film lines. Blends of the two are the cheapest way to make a sealable, moisture-proof film, which is why they dominate pouches, liners and pallet wrap. indicative (basis: industry demand splits) | polypropylene (BOPP, CPP) film paper and paper laminates compostable films (PLA, PBAT) reusable packaging |
| Agricultural film (mulch, greenhouse, silage) | 8% | about 5 Mtbasis | UV-stabilised LDPE and LLDPE films are cheap, flexible and transparent; mulch film raises yields and saves water. Thin mulch film is hard to recover from soil and is a major source of farm microplastics. indicative | biodegradable PBAT/PLA mulch thicker reusable films organic mulches |
| Extrusion coating and lamination (liquid cartons, paper cups, laminated tubes) | 7% | about 4 Mtbasis | Autoclave LDPE has long-chain branching that gives a stable melt curtain for coating paper and board at high line speeds; it makes cartons and cups liquid-tight. indicative | water-based barrier coatings PLA coatings aluminium-free mono-material laminates |
| Injection, rotomoulding and lids (water tanks, closures, housewares) | 8% | about 5 Mtbasis | LLDPE powders are the standard resin for rotomoulded water tanks, a large market in India, and soft LDPE suits snap-on lids and squeeze parts. indicative | HDPE polypropylene steel and concrete tanks |
| Wire and cable insulation and jacketing | 4% | about 2.4 Mtbasis | Low dielectric loss and moisture resistance; cross-linked LDPE (XLPE) insulates medium and high-voltage power cables, including grid and offshore wind links. indicative | PVC EPR rubber HDPE jackets |
| Other (EVA copolymers for solar encapsulant and foams, adhesives, foam, pipe) | 8% | about 5 Mtbasis | High-pressure reactors also make ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers used to encapsulate solar cells and in shoe foams; most new LDPE capacity in China is aimed at EVA (Argus 2025). From raw material to user
- Ethylene from a steam cracker About 1.01-1.02 t polymer-grade ethylene is needed per t of PE (indicative); feedstock is 70-90% of resin cash cost.
- Comonomer supply (LLDPE) LLDPE needs about 7-10% butene-1, hexene-1 or octene-1 by weight (indicative), bought in or made from ethylene.
- Polymerisation LDPE in tubular or autoclave reactors at about 1,500-3,000 bar; LLDPE in gas-phase, solution or slurry reactors at under 30 bar with Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysts (indicative).
- Pelletising and bagging Molten polymer is extruded with additives, cut into pellets and shipped in 25 kg bags or bulk; a 40 ft container carries about 24-26 t (indicative).
- Conversion Blown-film and cast-film lines turn about two-thirds of LDPE/LLDPE into film; the rest is moulded, coated or extruded.
- Use and end of life Most packaging film is used for under a year; globally only about 9% of plastic waste was recycled in 2019 (OECD, indicative).

- LDPE and LLDPE are about 60 Mt a year, roughly 14% of the 431 Mt of plastics made in 2024 (Plastics Europe, indicative share).
- PE capacity grew 3.8% a year for five years while demand grew 1.9%, pushing PE operating rates to 77% in 2025, and another 23 Mt of PE is due in 2027-28 (Argus, Feb 2026).
- India's EPR rules require flexible packaging to contain 10% recycled plastic in 2025-26, rising to 20% by 2027-28, which creates demand for clean recycled LDPE and LLDPE.
