Surfactants: Cycles
Why palm and coconut prices swing surfactant margins
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.Surfactant demand is steady, so the cycle comes from feedstocks: crude oil and benzene for LAS, lauric oils for fatty-alcohol surfactants, and ethylene for EO. Producers pass costs through on monthly or quarterly formulas, with a lag that squeezes margins when inputs rise fast and widens them when inputs fall. Lauric oil swings are larger than oil swings, so oleo-based producers see bigger margin moves. The floor is set by integrated producers' cash costs; the ceiling by detergent makers switching between LAS, SLES and ethoxylates.
The spread to watch EBITDA per tonne of merchant surfactant producers; LAS minus LAB; SLES minus fatty alcoholGalaxy reports EBITDA per tonne quarterly: about Rs 19,000-21,700 per t (about $225-255 per t) over FY25-FY26. Analysts cited gross margin of about Rs 49 per kg in H1 FY26 and Rs 53 per kg in Q3 FY26 (not confirmed by management).
Booms and busts
- 2021-2022
Palm kernel and coconut oil prices spiked with vegetable oil shortages and Indonesian export curbs; fatty alcohol and SLES prices rose sharply (indicative).
not retrieved here (see palm_oil and coconut tiles)
- FY2025-FY2026
Fatty alcohol rose to about $3,000/t, fell to $2,500-2,600 and climbed again from January 2026; Galaxy held EBITDA per tonne broadly flat through mix and pricing.
Galaxy EBITDA per t Rs 17,527 (Q3 FY25) to Rs 20,156 (Q3 FY26); 9M FY26 Rs 19,126 vs Rs 19,272 (Galaxy transcript)
- Q4 FY2026 (Jan-Mar 2026)
West Asia disruption and higher inputs; Galaxy's AMET volumes fell in the mid-teens and performance surfactant volumes fell high single digits.
Galaxy EBITDA per t Rs 20,113 vs Rs 21,715 a year earlier (Construction World May 2026)
- H1 2026
LAB in India spiked as benzene rose and India suspended the LAB Quality Control Order, then eased.
LAB India about $2,805/t (Apr 2026) to $1,988/t (Jun 2026) and $1,704/t (Aug 2026) (lab tile, Procurement Resource)
What drives the cycle
- Lauric oil prices. Palm kernel and coconut oil set fatty alcohol cost; they are more volatile than crude and hit by weather and Indonesian policy.
- Crude, kerosene and benzene. Set LAB cost and so LAS prices.
- Ethylene oxide availability. EO cannot be shipped far, so ethoxylators depend on nearby EO plants.
- Detergent demand and format shift. Powders favour LAS; liquids and pods favour SLES and ethoxylates.
- Trade and currency. US tariffs, the EU-India FTA and emerging-market currencies (Egypt) move Indian export volumes.
Metrics to track
| Metric | Why it matters | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy EBITDA per tonne and volume growth | the cleanest public margin series for merchant surfactants | quarterly results and calls |
| Palm kernel oil and coconut oil prices | oleo feed | MPOB, World Bank Pink Sheet, USDA |
| Fatty alcohol C12-14 prices | SLES and ethoxylate cost | ICIS, Argus |
| LAB CFR India | LAS cost | ICIS, Procurement Resource |
