Surfactants: Overview
From laundry to shampoo: where cleaning molecules end up
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.A surfactant has a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail, so it lifts grease and dirt into water, makes foam and stabilises emulsions. The tail comes from oil (LAB, oxo or Ziegler alcohols) or from palm kernel and coconut oil (fatty alcohols); the head from sulphonation, sulphation or ethoxylation. World sales exceed $49 billion, and household detergents take about 55%. Anionics such as LAS and SLES are about half the market. India is a big producer and exporter, with Galaxy Surfactants a global supplier to personal care brands. The climate question is fossil versus palm: neither is clearly better.
Volume about 17-20 Mt a year excluding soap (indicative, basis: about 5.8 Mt LAS from 4.4 Mt LAB, about 6-7 Mt of ethoxylates from about 4 Mt EO, plus alcohol sulphates, cationics and amphoterics) Market value more than $49 billion a year (base year 2023) Growth 3.6% a year to 2033 Ceresana, Surfactants Market Report World, 4th ed., Jan 2025; lab and ethylene_oxide tiles (volume derivation, indicative)Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Household laundry and dishwashing detergents | 55% | about 9.9 Mtbasis | LAS is the cheapest strong cleaner for powders and bars; SLES and alcohol ethoxylates suit liquids and cold-water washing. Demand grows with population, income and washing machines. Ceresana Jan 2025 (about 55% of demand) | Enzymes and builders that reduce surfactant dose Soap (bars) Biosurfactants |
| Personal care (shampoos, body wash, toothpaste, creams) | 12% | about 2.2 Mtbasis | Mild surfactants such as SLES, cocamidopropyl betaine, amino-acid surfactants and glucosides give foam without stripping skin. This is Galaxy Surfactants' specialty care business. Galaxy Surfactants FY26 (specialty care segment); share indicative | Sulphate-free amino-acid and glucoside systems |
| Industrial and institutional cleaning | 10% | about 1.8 Mtbasis | Hospitals, food plants, laundries and vehicle washes use concentrated non-ionic and anionic blends. indicative | Solvent cleaning Ultrasonic and steam cleaning |
| Agrochemicals, oilfield and mining | 8% | about 1.4 Mtbasis | Emulsifiers make pesticide concentrates (calcium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, ethoxylates); oilfield and mining use surfactants for enhanced recovery and flotation. lab tile (agro emulsifiers); share indicative | Polymeric dispersants |
| Textiles and leather processing | 5% | about 0.9 Mtbasis | Wetting, scouring and levelling agents in dyeing; China's textile auxiliaries market is about RMB 28 billion a year. Faxian Gongchang 2026 (textile auxiliaries); share indicative | Enzymatic scouring |
| Other industrial: paints, plastics, construction, food, emulsion polymerisation | 10% | about 1.8 Mtbasis | Emulsifiers make the latex in water-borne paints and adhesives and disperse pigments; consumption by plastics, paints and coatings makers grows about 2.8% a year. Ceresana Jan 2025 (2.8% growth); share indicative | Surfactant-free polymerisation (niche) |
From raw material to user
- Hydrophobe Petro route: kerosene paraffins and benzene to LAB (4.4 Mt in 2024, lab tile), or ethylene to Ziegler and oxo alcohols. Oleo route: palm kernel and coconut oil to fatty alcohols; fatty alcohol was about $2,500-3,000/t in 2025-26 (Galaxy Q3 FY26 call).
- Head group Sulphonation with SO3 (LAB to LAS), sulphation (alcohol to SLS), ethoxylation with ethylene oxide (about 12% of world EO, ethylene_oxide tile), amidation and quaternisation.
- Neutralisation and blending Acids are neutralised with caustic soda or soda ash to pastes of 28-70% active (indicative).
- Formulation Detergent and personal-care makers (HUL, P&G, Unilever, L'Oreal) blend surfactants with builders, enzymes and fragrances.
- Use and disposal Surfactants go down the drain and biodegrade in sewage plants or rivers.

- Household detergents take about 55% of surfactant demand and anionics are just under 49% of the market (Ceresana, Jan 2025).
- Petro-based fatty alcohol averages about 2.97 kg CO2e per kg against about 5.27 for palm-kernel-based, though palm on existing cropland can fall to about -1.5 (Shah et al., 2016).
- Galaxy Surfactants earned Rs 4,974 million EBITDA on Rs 52,704 million revenue in FY26, about Rs 19,000-20,000 per t (company results, May 2026).
