Cocoa: Production

How poor harvests in West Africa shrank supply

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

FAOSTAT records 5.23 million tonnes of cocoa beans in 2024, down from 5.68 million in 2020 after poor West African harvests. Côte d'Ivoire alone grew 36.1%, Indonesia 12.1% and Ghana 10.1%, with Ecuador, Nigeria and Cameroon next. The HHI of 1,748 shows moderate concentration, but two West African neighbours supply almost half. Radetzki & Wårell show how the pattern formed: heavy export taxes cut Ghana's world share from 40% to 14% between the early 1960s and early 1980s, while Côte d'Ivoire's rose from 9% to 26%.
