Germanium: Overview

Fibre, infrared and satellites: where germanium earns its price

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Fibre optics: germanium tetrachloride dopes the core of telecom and data-network fibren/a n/a basis Germanium dioxide raises the refractive index of the silica core so light stays trapped in it, with very low signal loss. It is added as germanium tetrachloride vapour during preform making. Fibre for data centres, 5G backhaul and undersea cables is the main volume market, and a US plant in Quapaw, Oklahoma makes the tetrachloride from imported and recycled feed (USGS 2026). USGS MCS 2026, Germanium Fluorine- or phosphorus-doped silica designs (some specialty fibres)
Pure-silica-core fibre with fluorine-doped cladding
Infrared optics: lenses and windows for thermal imaging, night vision and missile seekersn/a n/a basis Germanium metal is transparent to 8-14 micron thermal infrared, has a high refractive index and can be machined into precise lenses. That makes it the default for military thermal sights and many civil thermal cameras. Machining swarf is routinely recycled, and old military lenses are reclaimed (USGS 2026). USGS MCS 2026, Germanium Chalcogenide glass (moulded IR lenses)
Zinc selenide and zinc sulphide windows
Electronics and solar: germanium wafers for multijunction space solar cells, germane gas, SiGe chipsn/a n/a basis Germanium substrates match the crystal lattice of gallium arsenide layers, so they carry the most efficient triple-junction solar cells used on satellites. A plant in St. George, Utah makes these wafers from imported and recycled germanium. Germane gas is used to grow silicon-germanium layers in fast transistors. Satellite launches are a growth driver (Fastmarkets 2025 preview). USGS MCS 2026; Fastmarkets (Dec 2024) Gallium arsenide substrates
Silicon (most electronics)
Radiation detectors (high-purity germanium crystals)n/a n/a basis Ultra-pure germanium crystals give the sharpest energy resolution for gamma-ray spectroscopy, used in nuclear safeguards, border screening and physics labs. Volumes are small but purity requirements are extreme. USGS MCS 2026 Cadmium zinc telluride detectors (room temperature, lower resolution)
Sodium iodide scintillators
Polymerisation catalysts (germanium dioxide for PET plastic)n/a n/a basis Germanium dioxide gives very clear PET resin, which some bottle and film makers, mainly in Japan, prefer. It is a price-sensitive use and the first to switch away when germanium is expensive. USGS MCS 2026 (substitutes); EU CRM 2023 Antimony catalysts (most PET)
Titanium catalysts
USGS gives only the order of US end uses for 2025 (fibre optics, infrared optics, electronics and solar, detectors); no global percentage split is published in the sources used. World output is only about 150 t a year (World Mining Data 2026, 2024 data).

From mine to user

  1. 1. Zinc ore or lignite mining Germanium sits in trace amounts in sphalerite (zinc sulphide) and some lignite coals. It is not paid for at the mine; the zinc or coal is.
  2. 2. Zinc concentrate or coal combustion Zinc concentrate goes to a smelter; in China germanium-rich lignite is burned and the fly ash kept. In the US, Alaskan zinc concentrate is shipped to a refinery in Canada (USGS 2026).
  3. 3. Germanium concentrate Leach residues or fly ash are treated to make a germanium-rich intermediate. About 60% of 2008 output came from zinc residues and about 30% from coal fly ash (USGS Circular 1365, 2010).
  4. 4. Chlorination and distillation The concentrate is chlorinated to germanium tetrachloride, which is distilled to high purity. Some tetrachloride goes straight to fibre makers.
  5. 5. Dioxide and metal Tetrachloride is hydrolysed to germanium dioxide, reduced to metal and zone refined. Europe's 99.999% metal price averaged about $4,100/kg in 2025 (USGS, Argus).
  6. 6. Products Fibre preforms, infrared lens blanks, wafers for space solar cells and detector crystals. China's Yunnan Lincang Xinyuan has capacity for 300,000 solar wafers a year (Reuters 2023).
  7. 7. Scrap recycling Machining swarf, fibre-making waste, used wafers and old military lenses are recycled; the EU end-of-life recycling input rate is still only 2% (EU CRM 2023).

Three things to know

  • China's reported germanium metal exports for January to September fell from 36,656 kg in 2023 to 7,520 kg in 2025.
  • The first transistor, made at Bell Labs in 1947, used germanium rather than silicon (Conway, pdf p. 82).
  • European germanium metal prices rose from $3,150 to $5,380/kg between January and October 2025.
