Potash: Movement
The trade gap left by unreported Russian exports
What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions. In 2024 world imports of potassium chloride (HS 310420) were worth $18.3 billion, but reported exports only $8.9 billion (Comtrade). The gap exists because Russia and Belarus did not report. Among reporters, Canada sent 64.7% of export value, the US 13.9% and Germany 11.9%. Brazil took 23.2% of imports, China 20.6% and the US 20.3%. Saskatchewan potash goes by rail to the US and to Pacific ports. Belarus lost its Lithuanian port route in 2022 and now ships via Russia. Canada supplied 79% of US imports over 2021-24 (USGS).
