Poultry: Extraction

Why farmers cannot breed their own chickens

What this tab covers How it is mined, drilled or grown, and processed into a tradeable form: the main methods compared, their unit economics, by-products, and the companies that do this work globally and in India.

Modern broilers descend from a few proprietary breeding lines. Morgan describes hybrid stock that is good for only one generation, so producers must keep buying parent birds (pdf p. 250). Chicks are raised in climate-controlled houses on corn and soybean meal and reach slaughter weight within weeks. Feed conversion is efficient, at about two pounds of grain per pound of gain, against seven for beef (Morgan, pdf p. 148). Integrators often own the birds and feed, while contract farmers supply housing and labour. Feathers, blood and offal are rendered into feed.

Modern chicken comes mostly from vertically integrated systems. One company controls breeder flocks, hatcheries, feed mills and processing, and contracts farmers to grow the birds. This model dominates in the US, Brazil, Thailand and, increasingly, India and China. In India much of the output still reaches consumers as live birds sold through local traders and meat shops. Backyard and village flocks remain important for rural households in Asia and Africa. Feed and disease, above all avian influenza, set profitability.

How each method works

Vertically integrated contract model (US, Brazil, Thailand)

The integrator places chicks and feed with contract growers, pays them a fee per kg of live bird, and slaughters and markets the birds. Brazil and the US export large surpluses from this system.

Very low cost and fast expansion, but growers carry the capital risk and avian influenza can shut export markets.

FAOSTAT 2024; USDA WASDE, Oct 2026 Indian integrator model with live-bird marketing

Integrators such as Suguna and Venky's supply chicks, feed and veterinary support to contract farmers and buy back grown birds. Most birds are sold live to traders and neighbourhood shops; chilled and frozen processing is a small but growing share.

Fast growth with little capital per farmer, but prices swing with maize and soybean meal costs and with rumours or disease scares that hit demand.

FAOSTAT 2024; Venky's FY2025 results Chinese mixed system (white-feather broilers and yellow-feather local breeds)

Large integrators raise fast-growing white broilers for processing, while local yellow-feather birds, sold live or freshly slaughtered, serve consumers who prefer their taste.

Large domestic market, but dependent on imported soybeans and exposed to disease and import bans on grandparent stock.

FAOSTAT 2024 Backyard and village flocks

Households keep small flocks of dual-purpose birds that scavenge and lay eggs, and sell or eat them locally.

Important for rural nutrition and income, but slow-growing and hard to protect from avian influenza.

India produced 5.02 Mt of chicken meat in 2024, 3.9% of world output, up from 0.86 Mt in 2000 (FAOSTAT). Growth came from integrators such as Suguna and Venky's using contract farming. India trades little chicken; feed (maize and soybean meal) is the main cost and the main link to world markets.
