Rapeseed: Movement

Canadian seed shipped to Chinese and German crushers

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

World rapeseed exports (HS 1205) were worth $13.1 billion in 2024 (Comtrade). Canada shipped 33.3% of export value, Australia 23.2% and Ukraine 14.1%. China took 27.5% of imports, Germany 22.5%, Japan 9.0% and Belgium 8.6%. The EU imports seed to run its crushers and biodiesel plants. Canadian canola oil and meal also go largely to the US. Trade policy matters: China has repeatedly restricted Canadian canola during diplomatic disputes, most recently with tariffs in 2025. Australian seed then fills gaps in Europe and China.
