Rapeseed: Production
How breeding and biodiesel nearly quadrupled the crop
What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.World rapeseed output was 87.9 Mt in 2024, up from 24.4 Mt in 1990 (FAOSTAT). Growth came from canola breeding, biodiesel mandates and rising demand for vegetable oils. Canada grew 21.9% of the 2024 crop, China 19.2%, India 15.1%, Australia 7.3%, Russia 5.3% and France 4.5%. The HHI of 1239 means production is unconcentrated, though the EU as a bloc is a top producer. China and India consume almost all of their own crops, so export supply is far more concentrated in Canada and Australia.
