Natural rubber: Characteristics

Why synthetics cannot match it in heavy tyres

What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).

Supply volume characteristics

CharacteristicFigureWhat it meansSource
Current production volume14.83 Mt of natural rubber (2024)Output nearly tripled from 5.23 Mt in 1990 but has grown slowly since 14.24 Mt in 2020. India made 8.75 lakh t in 2024-25.FAOSTAT 2024; Rubber Board via Lok Sabha, Aug 2025
Inventory and stock levelsnot published as a world figureVisible stocks sit in Shanghai Futures Exchange warehouses and Chinese bonded zones; volumes were not in the sources used. China holds state reserves. India has no buffer stock. The standing stock is the tree population: India had about 2 lakh ha of untapped plantations in 2025.content_v2 rubber stocks; Lok Sabha Unstarred Q 2649, Aug 2025
Capacity utilisationIndia: about 2 lakh ha untapped against 3.8 lakh ha harvestedTapping intensity is the real utilisation rate: farmers stop tapping when prices are low or rains heavy. In India about 2 lakh ha, half in Kerala, were left untapped. A world tapping rate is not published.Lok Sabha Unstarred Q 2649, Aug 2025; FAOSTAT 2024
Geographic and producer concentrationThailand 32.3%, top-3 (Thailand, Indonesia, Côte d'Ivoire) 58.9%, HHI 1,597Moderately concentrated. Côte d'Ivoire has become the third-largest producer. Processing is led by Sri Trang, Halcyon Agri and Hainan Rubber; tyre makers (Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear) dominate demand. A top-5 company share is not published.FAOSTAT 2024
Supply elasticityshort run: medium through tapping frequency; long run: at least 7 years for new treesOutput responds within months as farmers tap more or less. New planting takes at least seven years to raise output, so the 2011 price peak led to a glut years later.Rubber World, Jan 2025; content_v2 rubber supercycle
Project pipeline and CapExIndia North East project: 150,915 ha planted of a 200,000 ha target; West African expansionIndia's tyre-industry-funded North East plantation project had planted 150,915 ha by August 2025. Côte d'Ivoire supplies 17.7% of export value and keeps expanding. Per-hectare CapEx was not found.Lok Sabha, Aug 2025; UN Comtrade 2024
Logistics and export flowsabout 88% of output exported (2018); world exports worth $13.9 billion (2024)TSR bales and RSS move in containers from Laem Chabang, Songkhla, Belawan and Abidjan to China, the US, Japan and India. The Strait of Malacca is the main chokepoint for Asian supply.Radetzki & Warell 2021; UN Comtrade 2024

Material characteristics Agricultural / soft commodity

Natural rubber is almost pure cis-1,4-polyisoprene. Its high strength, elasticity, tear resistance and low heat build-up under repeated flexing make it essential for truck, aircraft and radial tyres, where synthetics cannot fully replace it. Grades are set by technical specifications for dirt, ash, volatile matter and plasticity, which predict processing behaviour.

PropertyValue / specificationWhy it mattersSource
Dirt content (TSR20)0.16% maximumDirt causes weak points and failures in tyresISO 2000 / SMR and STR specifications (indicative)
Ash, volatile matter and nitrogen (TSR20)ash 1.0%, volatile matter 0.8%, nitrogen 0.6% maximumControl consistency and curing behaviour in compoundingISO 2000 (indicative)
Plasticity (Po) and PRIPo at least 30; plasticity retention index at least 40Show resistance to oxidation and how the rubber will mix and processISO 2000 (indicative)
Tensile strength and elongationgum vulcanisate roughly 25-30 MPa and about 700% elongation at breakStrain-crystallisation gives strength that most synthetics lackpolymer literature (indicative)
Low heat build-up and low glass transitionTg about -70 CKeeps heavy truck and aircraft tyres cool and flexiblepolymer literature (indicative)
