Coking coal: Movement

Coke trade and Indonesia's new smelter-side ovens

Coke trade and Indonesia's new smelter-side ovens What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

Coking coal has no trade code of its own within HS 2701, so its clearest traded product is coke (HS 2704), a small $9.6 billion export trade in 2024. Poland (22%) and China (20%) led, with Indonesia (16%) rising as coke ovens are built beside new Chinese-invested smelters there, and Colombia at 11%. India (17%), Brazil (12%) and Germany (10%) were the main importers. The coal moves mainly by sea from Queensland to China, India, Japan and South Korea, and overland from Mongolia to China. Russian coal now heads east after the EU's 2022 ban.
